Hey everyone just wanted to put down somewhere my situation.  it’s been a crazy few weeks.  In August I have bowel issues which the doctors referred me to a specialist.  I was given a ct scan and colonoscopy a couple of weeks which I was told the colonoscopy looked ok but biopsy’s would check for colitis.  During a phonecall follow up the bowel specialist told me that looking at the ct scan she had  a concern over a lesion on my bladder and was referring me urgently to the urology department.  I had a conversation over the phone due to covid and the urology consultant said he was going straight towards the procedure where he can scrape out and send off for histology.  This was two weeks ago and I’m having this procedure on Monday.  Scared of the outcome it’s totally out of the blue Only symptoms if any was that of cystitis a few times over the years but always cleared up with antibiotics or just rode themselves out.  More scared because I am my mums main carer she has Parkinson’s.

  • Hi Boozeybird. It is not uncommon for bladder cancer to be found while looking for something else. It doesn't always show obvious symptoms, but lucky they have discovered it. We know how scary it is as we have been there and know that the uncertainty can be very worrying. Be aware that bladder cancer can be treated successfully. The procedure you will be having is called a TURBT (trans urethral resection of bladder tumour). It sounds worse than it is. Usually done in day surgery or maybe an overnight stay. As you say, they scrape away the tumour and send off sample biopsies for analysis. A few weeks wait then for results and the results determine the next step. Any questions or concerns, then just shout out by hitting the reply button below to ask. As we all understand what you are going through, this is also a great place to offload any worries. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi Boozeybird, Welcome to the forum. Sympathies both on the shock diagnosis and on your Mum's Parkinson's. My mum had that too so I can empathise a bit. If you can find a shop selling it before Monday, grab a bottle or two of Robinson's Lemon Barley Water [not the fruit'n'barley stuff]. After your TURBT you need to drink plenty of fluids to help flush out any gunk or bugs to ward off repeats of cystitis, and Lemon Barley is excellent as it has some anti-bug properties and is also easy to drink compared to plan water. It was recommended by my old GP decades back and saved me from a bout of cystitis then.

Others will no doubt be along with more encouragement and tips, best wishes for Monday, Denby

  • Hi Boozeybird, it’s very normal to be scared, we’ve all been there.
I’ve been out the same day and also had to stay overnight once as my procedure was late in the day. You may be given a dose of mitomycin (liquid chemo)afterwards directly into the bladder.  Don’t worry, it’s painless and generally no side effects. You will have to take it easy for a few days and drink plenty of water to flush things through. You will probably see some blood clots after a few days but this is only the scab coming away so nothing to be alarmed about.
All the best for Monday, let us know how you get on.

  • It's always a shock when something like this is diagnosed out of the blue, which is what so often happens. Depending how you react to a general anaesthetic, you may feel a bit tired & woozy for a week or so after the TURBT. You will also likely have painful, frequent urination which will gradually subside over the next couple of weeks. When caught early, bladder cancer is very treatable, but the wait for results is very hard. When you know what you are dealing with, the way ahead will become clearer. Feel free to come & ask any questions or share feelings here.

  • Hi there.

    Welcome.

It is a shock at the start - so much to take in. It will all fall into place.

I second Denby's Robinson's Lemon Barley Water - it is so easy to drink. And, for a change, Robinson's Crushed Lime and Mint Cordial. I get both delivered from Tesco or Morrisons.

Be prepared for the cystitis and I had a lot of fatigue. But, all in all, it's not too bad. A relief when it's over. Oh, and I didn't wear (but should have) some Tena pads. Just in case.

We'll be thinking of you and your Mum.

    Keep in touch.

    Gandulf.
