Hi there. My Dad (aged 83) has been diagnosed with cancer of the ureta and we know that it has spread into the muscle. He had 7 radiotherapy sessions around a month ago but he is not physically well enough to have surgery. He has now been told over the phone that they will not be doing another MRI scan to see if this has had any affect at all as they would be unable to tell due to swelling?

He has now got a community nurse checking in weekly re pain medication etc but that sounds like all they are planning to do. Dad has not asked the prognosis (my Mum said she thinks he does not want to know).

I am finding it hard to manage the uncertainty and would rather know what the prognosis is but have to accept that it is his decision.

I guess what I am asking is if anyone has any ideas on how long he is likely to have? I have not talked to my children about it yet but will need to and have to decide when I need to do this.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you xx

  • Hi JS173 and welcome to the community, although sorry to hear about your Dad. The uncertainty must be very worrying as it sounds as though they may not be offering your Dad any further treatment at present. It would be difficult for anyone here to give you an idea of what the future holds as everyone is different and we do not come across situations like this very often here. Some of the group members may have some experience. We also have an Ask a Nurse  section here where you should get a more professional answer if you would like to post your concerns there.  Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.
