Wishing you all a very happy Easter.I hope you are all coping in the lockdown. My peaceful time in the garden has been ruined by the noise of power tools ! Love and best wishes to you all.Jane xx
Happy Easter to all. Fantastic weather, perfect for working in the garden. However we have been on a helter skelter concerning our duckling project. First we thought all eggs had failed and we felt a bit demoralised. Then 3 days overdue we heard two eggs chirping from inside the incubator! Family elation prevailed! Number 1 baby (Tweet) arrived after a fairly arduous battle with it's shell. Birds work really hard to get born. After 24 hours we moved Tweet to a brooder under a heat lamp. We basked in our success! Another egg was pipping and duckling breaking it's way out but very very slowly. Finally after 36 anxious hours, we could see an exhausted baby so we nervously helped a bit, picking off shell with tweezers (following instructions from a text book....oh it was terrifying!) Eventually number 2 fought it's way out and was left over night in incubator to recover. Now both ducklings in brooder, but number 2 appears to have a gammy leg, and Tweet appears bent on attacking it's disabled sibling. Oh the stress! But a marvellous distraction from all human matters medical. H xxx
Reminds me of a sad story that occurred when I was in hosp after RC. Mr T keeps ducks, Indian runners, not renowned for sitting on eggs. But one had sat for a few weeks & while I was in hosp, one morning he heard cheeping - one little baby. He had to rush out & buy stuff to make a separate pen & so on. However, while he was in the compound making in, Mum & baby racing around - he accidentally trod on the duckling & that was that.
Better story a couple of years ago when another duck started sitting - ended up with 13 ducklings!! This time more successful & most of the made adulthood, increasing the size of the flock somewhat!
Good luck with your two babies.
Hi there herothedog. That sounds amazing! How wonderful to not only see new life being hatched, but to help it into this world. I hope they both thrive, and number 2’s leg heels. We have a duck pond on our small housing estate, and I miss going to see them. My other half has been taking photos of them to show me when he is out walking our dog. No sign of any babies yet, but no sign of the females, they are hiding in the reeds, only the males out on the pond, so should be babies appearing soon.
Oh H that is fantastic, how wonderful hope all goes well with them

When I rule the world, I will ban power tools and bonfires on Saturday afternoons and all day on Sundays.
Our Sunday has been blighted by power washer Pete and mad Mike on his mower. And what's with all the traffic?

I may appear to be listening but in my head I'm all at sea.
Sadly overnight Number 2 went to the great nest in the sky. Duckling number 1 (Tweet) continues to thrive. There are still 5 eggs in the incubator but no sign of hatching so I'm afraid Tweet may be an only child. Very windy here and temperatures seem to have dropped back to winter levels. Brrr x
