An Aside

Hi All. Been busy the past few days decorating our large bedroom. (Didn't need doing in my opinion). Ceiling done no problem. We have a wide and intricate Victorian coving around the ceiling which the wife wanted painted pale grey as a feature. I found a large tin of grey paint in the bargain bucket section. Opened it up and it was a bit dark, almost charcoal, so I mixed some white to lighten it. Still a bit dark but looked ok to me. Spent hours painting the coving, but it looked almost black rather than light grey. I called it industrial chic. The wife came home from work, took one look at my lovely work and said - well you don't need to know what she said. Reminded her of a crematorium. So I have spent this morning sanding and priming trying to get rid of it. Gonna take a few coats. Anyway, back up the ladder now. LaughingLaughing Best wishes.

  • Hi rily,Your post reminded me about some friends I had in Hull.I knew they were decorating but didn’t know how it was going.A friend & I were invited round there for a meal & just before we rang the doorbell my friend said ‘don’t mention the decorating’.Once we got into the hall,a whole wall was covered in tester pot colour squares & my friends were barely speaking to each other. They were eventually able to pick a colour they agreed on but it took them weeks.I’ve just got a small area above the bath to paint but need to find something to stand on that is safe.Happy & safe decorating.Love Jane x

Well your post did make me smile rily.

I always think that I would like a change when we redecorate and end up spending a fortune on test pots only to go back to the colour we had originally.

Perhaps a test pot would have been prudent on this occasion!Wink

    Happy painting, Luce x

  • Hi Jane. Best thing to stand on for painting above the bath is a bath board designed for disabled folk, It has adjustable stops which help keep it firm. Set up your stepladders beside the bath and step across. You can probably borrow one/rent from local Red Cross/find in a charity shop. Or request on Freegle/Freecycle. Failing that, if you want to put a stool in the bath, line bath with folded damp/wet towels-these will protect bath and reduce the slipping. Happy painting,

  • Thanks Denby,That’s useful to know.Luckily the area is not that high up but I want to avoid having to stretch.love Jane x

  • Hi Rily - perhaps ask the missus to do it herself......  We've just finished repainting the kitchen. Himself did the ceiling & woodwork, i did the walls. Amazingly we agreed on the colour from paint charts fairly quickly (just a shade darker than before). I presented a short list of new curtain fabrics & happily we both agreed on that too.

I remember getting fabric samples for the living room, years ago. We chose one, but when I went in to order curtains, I picked something completely different...  I don't think himself would dare argue with my choice!

  • Hi Teassswill. My choice of paint was based purely on price rather than aesthetics. False economy. I am now being strictly supervised. Not allowed to go anywhere near a wallpaper shop. I no longer have any say in colours or fabrics. Just following instructions now. GrinningGrinning Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Laughing   aaaw you lot kill me!

We bought a load of Antique Gold but was a tin short, so off we went to get more.  MrB said he couldn't bend to get to the bottom shelf so I grabbed a tin.  Got home, painted, sat & admired over a cuppa, then he noticed that half the room was matt & the other was silk Flushed  Luckily the join was where the one edge of the curtain went so not noticeable at all, unless you have an eagle eye.

Actually we have a quite a stash of that paint as MrB kept smelling urine & thought that it must be the paint. I thought it was me coming home with a catheter that first time  Thinking  Anyway I queried this with the company, & it was caused by an additive that had been removed from the paint.  There's no way I was doing all that painting again, so we just left the windows open all summer & have stashed it for the next  job.  The smell did go away, thankfully.

  • Heard a whole Radio 4 programme about that cat-pee smelling paint recently. Glad your lot stopped smelling eventually, some people had it much worse.

  • Hi BLANKET. My old dad had a saying for these little discrepancies, something I use now,

"A man on a galloping horse won't notice" Sunglasses

    Best wishes.

  • And a blind man would be glad to see it!

So the lesson learned is, do it the way your wife said, you are only a permanent guest in her house which can change if you mess up!

I may appear to be listening but in my head I'm all at sea.
