Hello All

I have been told I have bladder cancer I have had the camera in and seen the 'beast' and some other nasty looking red bits too

I have a catheter fitted which I have had for 8 weeks now and its driving me mad !

My op is not until the 31st so confused, dont know which way to turn

Oh and my wife is housebound / bedbound and I am her full time carer

so life is s**t !!

  • Hello Ollie27, so sorry to hear your news and it's rotten to have a catheter in for so long. Not surprised it's causing irritation! Roll on 31st when hopefully the beast will be out and all clear. That's always a good feeling. You might need to stay in overnight depending on how things go, so hopefully you and your wife have some family or friends to support you?  Afterwards I'm afraid there will be another wait for the biopsy results, and the multidisciplinary team will think about which treatment to recommend. Whatever the results someone on this site will share your experience and will pop up to offer information and cheer you on. None of us wanted bladder cancer but many of us are still here trucking along and enjoying a good life years after our diagnosis. Best wishes x

  • Hello Andy and a second welcome to the group. Many of us will be familiar to how you are feeling. The waiting can be very frustrating. Once things get under way and you have your op, it takes away a bit of the anxiety as you feel something positive is happening. Herothedog has given you a good overview of what to expect. There is a wide variety of experiences here, so always someone here to answer any questions, or just to talk if you feel like. This is a supportive place where we all understand. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

I presume you have the catheter due to the enlarged prostrate? Are they going to do both at the same time?

Hopefully in a couple of weeks they will have have sorted you out and can get rid of the catheter.

Best of luck for the 31st

Yep your correct I am greedy !!

I asked the doc the question at my pre op about doing them both at the same time and he said 'oh no we dont want cross infection'

So I am hoping the tablets I am on will sort the prostate if not another night in hospital ;-((

    Thanks for your kind words

    Feel much more positive ;-))

My husband also has an enlarged prostate and has now has a catheter since the 6August when he had his second Turbt/biopsy. He has decided to have his bladder removed and they will take the prostate at the same time . He can't wait to get rid of the catheter so would sympathise with you. Best wishes

  • Hi Ollie

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis and frustration with your catheter.  My husband was diagnosed with Stage 2 invasive bladder cancer back in March and after having a TURBT was fitted with a catheter, which like you, he hated.  It was suggested that he self catheterised and after the initial horror of the thought of it, he has been self catheterising ever since as he still has retention.  It has become part of his life now and he self catheterises three times a day and pees normally inbetween.  He has had his month long radiography throughout June and had a CT scan last week and we are now waiting to see the his oncologist on 8th Novemberto see if his cancer has been zapped..  It has been a very long seven months!  He has accepted that he will have to self catheterise for life now as he has the added complication of having a large thoracic aortic aneurysm  and the urologists are unwilling (at the moment) to proceed with a radical cystectomy because of this, but as I said before, it has become a part of his life now and he has no problems with it.  Good luck on the 31st.
