Hi,Has anyone else struggled with a loss of appetite ? Jane

  • Hi Jane, maybe the community could be more help if you can say in what circumstances you struggle with loss of appetite, eg after an anaesthetic, after BCG, during intravesical [into-bladder] or systemic [by mouth or intravenous] chemo series? etc. i think there's some guidance on this on the Macmillan website I've seen.

  • Thank you Denby,I meant a loss of appetite in general.I have not had any treatment yet,but am supposed to be having a cystectomy.I will know more on the 27 August when I see the specialist.I don't know the grade of cancer yet, just that it is the rarer Squamous cell type.I think I will have to see the doctor,I'm very slim and cannot afford to lose weight before the surgery.Jane

  • Hi Jane, I can't find a very delicate way to say I am sorry to hear you have the squamous cell type cancer and have to face the cystectomy - so there it is, sorry to hear this. However you are definitely doing the right thing to be thinking ahead to make sure you are as prepared as possible. Certainly see your doctor, and maybe take anyone with you [depending on your relationship with the doctor you can get an appointment with] to make sure no time is wasted in platitudes rather than useful help of whatever kind.

Anyway now other forum readers know the type you have and that you are currently pre-treatment, hopefully someone with a more closely similar experience will be able to offer more help.

    best wishes,

  • Thank you Denby,I've just finished antibiotics for a streptoccal urinary infection but my bladder is not emptying properly again.Luckily the nurse at the health centre has been very helpful and said to get back in touch if I had any further problems.I have been feeling below par for a while and I wonder whether the loss of appetite is due to the cancer spreading.I know that the rarer bladder cancers tend to be muscle invasive and have a poorer prognosis.I remain realistic but with some hope.See what the doctor/nurse says next week.Jane

    Hi Jane

Sorry to read your post it really is frustrating those who want to lose weight can't and those who want to put it on can't, it's a vicious circle.

Can I suggest that you repost you question giving as much background information as you can including what you have been told about your diagnosis to our specialist nurses on

    Ask a Nurse page

(click on the green text above to open up the nurses page where if you click on Ask a question you can ask away.)

The nurses do hope to respond within 2 working days.

Hope you get the answers you are looking for and get a explanation to your weight loss.

Please remember as much information as possible will help the nurses to give you an answer but they wont be able to make a diagnosis on line

    Regards

    Ian

  • Thank you Ian,I will repost my question.Jane
