Hello everyone!

I always come here when im stressed or worried, I feel like you all have a calming effect on my mind.

my mum has stage 3b t4a N0 M0 pure SCC - she has done two rounds of cis/gem and had her midway scan yesterday.

The tumour at the last scan hadnt actually gone into any other organs but it had gone out of the last layer of the bladder and was pressing against my mums vagina wall hence why the T4a grading.

I have been an absolute wreck since this diagnoses, I have lost over 1st from being sick and not eating.

I am so worried from this scan showing that the cancer will have grown because of the lack of response this type of cancer has to chemo so its also been playing on my mind that the MDT have wasted time doing the chemo and not gone straight to surgery, and then I worry what if this cancer has now grown to the point where surgery is not on the table, my brain is just going round and round of the what ifs and then blaming the doctors for wasting time on chemo....

sorry to always come here and dump my worries and stresses

  • Hello  . No need for any apologies. We are all familiar with waiting and not knowing. It may be a bit early to see if the Gem/Cis is having any effect. Chemo doesn't have an immediate impact. It works gradually and takes time. It continues working after treatment finishes. If it comes to surgery, then the chemo usually helps things. I hope mum feels better soon. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • So sorry you are so stressed. It’s so weird that all our brains go to the worst case scenario? Mine always had before. I think I thought if I worried about things then either they wouldn’t happen or at least I’d be mentally prepared. I’m not sure. All I know that thinking the worst makes you even more anxious. Along this road someone gave me the advice to say to myself ‘what if it turns out better than you fear?’  That has helped me a bit maybe! We all have been anxious and worried and tortured ourselves with ‘what ifs’. As someone on here often reminds us Worry doesn’t cure cancer.
I hope you can slow down your racing mind   Sending calm and support to you xx

  • Hi Worried Daughter,

I'm sorry you are feeling so bad. Its the helplessness that gets us isn't it? And seeing one's mother in this position is extremely upsetting.

I've been in both your position and your mother's with bladder cancer. Though my mother was ill in 1974. So I'm the one with the worry doesn't cure cancer mantra.  But I take some comfort from the knowledge that doctors have many more treatments these days.

Meanwhile  I hope you can find a way to keep yourself fit so you can help your mother through this. In your position I and my sister took over practical stuff - she could cook and I could drive so we started there to relueve my father a little.

When I was ill, as well as dealing with her own work (she has patients to tend to) my daughter did all sorts of things:  made me broccoli soup to relieve the Gem/Cis constipation, came and saw her parents as often as possible, supported  her Dad who was also extremely worried, came with us to reviews with the oncologist, and got me a second opinion etc, etc.

I'm sure you are helping your mother similarly and I sure she is grateful. Practical things really do help, including helping yourself, worrying just exhausts you.

Final thought, talking to someone on the phone or in person may suit you even better. There is a telephone helpline on this site, or if there is one near you  Maggie's centre is very good for supporting family as well as patients. And of course we're always here.

    All the best,
