Hi 1st post here, had a Radical cystectomy last monday (8th June), carried out robotically and appears to have been successful. Drain out, stoma looking good yet here I am 8 days down lying in hospital felling weak and shattered, can't sleep or settle, fitted with NG tube unable to eat properly and throwing up due to temperamental Postoperative Ileus.
Just feeling overwhelmed and sorry for myself and wondering how long this will drag on.
Hi JivinB
I managed to avoid the NG tube and managed to get things moving after about five days by drinking lots of water chewing gum, walking around the corridors etc. However I still felt absolutely drained, no appetite and had bouts of vomiting. Couldn’t sleep much either which all conspired to make me feel miserable whilst in hospital. Once judged stoma competent and fit to be discharged, after 8 nights, it all changed once I got home. Appetite returned quickly and connected to night bag I started sleeping better than for years. It did seem a slow recovery at the time but I was able to resume a pretty normal life after about 3 months.
Hope my story helps. It seemed awful at the time but it does get better.
I think it helped to get dressed and walking even feeling weak and ill.I did have to have one day in bed before the n.g tube was fitted where I was too sick to get up.It was better being at home.I didn’t eat much but snacking helped and gradually the weight went back on.
Miserable day 10 coming to an end, Thank You all for the advice and encouragement, done the walking, gum etc. The vomiting has stopped ( fingers crossed) but the consultant has removed anything by mouth, medication etc. Cannot get rid of the hiccups.
Today has been spent sitting on the commode like a running tap or sitting in chair, lying in bed wearing a filling pad. Hard to take at 67 but stay positive, they struggle in the wards to jump as you require, the staff everywhere have exemplary.
My wife has taken on husband cleaning duties years before she may expected.
CT scans of bowel passed with flying colours all other stats are spot on no issues. Its just painful waiting game.
