Hi there,
I am a male aged 73, and I have just started the 6 week BCG instillation programme after my TURBT (carcinoma in situ). The first instillation 10 days ago really rocked me, with persistent cystitis and heavy flu-like symptoms that both persisted after 5 days. My second instillation has been postponed until next week to give me time to recover. I am just wondering if anyone else out there has experienced similar issues, and if so, how did things progress for you?
Thanks,
Doug.
Doug07 . Hi Doug and welcome to the group although sorry to hear you are in some discomfort with BCG. I see you have created an interesting blog. Not had BCG myself but we see these sort of side effects here often. I am sure some of our BCGers will be along to offer some advice. Best wishes.
Hi Doug
The reaction varies from person to person, in my case , 21 so far, have tolerated it well but the symptoms have varied in intensity from treatment to treatment. It isn't pleasant but most people get used to it over time
The main thing is it appears to have stimulated your immune system which is the whole point. Hope you can keep the treatment up I am sure your nursing team will have ideas about how to keep going.
Best regards
Hi Bsk (for short!),
Thank you for your response, especially coming from someone with so much experience of the process. As you say the symptoms vary in intensity with each instillation, it will be whatever it will be, and I guess we’ll manage on a week by week basis. And you are absolutely right on the money with your observation that my first instillation has clearly stimulated my immune system, which is the whole point! I need to change my perspective…..
Thanks once again. Best wishes for the future.
Thanks for your reply, Community Champion Rily! Thanks for the welcome (almost instant!) and yes, already had a very useful response from one experienced person. I don’t know how you know that I’ve created a blog; only started it a few days ago!!
Hope all is well with you…….
Thanks once again.
Doug.
Hi Doug, welcome to the group ad BCG club . I am sorry you are having this reaction to the BCG . I have managed to get to number 20 with varied reactions but doable. If you click on my name you can read the details . I hope number 2 goes a bit easier on you, its good that your team are giving your bladder a rest , I had the same two times on this journey. Good luck, keep in touch
Much love Angela x
A lovely message, Angela, thank you. I did click on your name and read a bit of your journey and it was good to be able to share your experiences and perspective. For example, not telling the children. I am actually going to tell one son tonight, as it happens, because other family circumstances dictate that it is best that I do. But if I could have kept it in-house, as it were, I would have.
Just had a call from my team to see how I am doing. They’re encouraging me the best they can and I can see that it is really up to me not to buckle under the side-effects onslaught. So No2 next week. Well done indeed with your 20!
Very best wishes, Doug.
