Sister with muscle invasive bladder cancer

Hi,

I have followed posts on this forum for several months. My sister was diagnosed last November with muscle invasive bladder cancer. The consultant surgeon advised 6 cycles of chemotherapy followed by a full bladder removal and a hysterectomy.

She has completed 5 cycles so far reasonably comfortably. After her 3rd Cycle was completed, the oncologist told us that there was a significant reduction in the tumour.

However, Just before her 6th cycle, her platelets were low so she had a blood transfusion. After her bloods were tested, her platelets were fine but her kidney function wasn't. She has a nephrostomy drain for her left kidney. She was diagnosed with a kidney infection and has been treated in hospital over the last 10 days and is recovering well.

Her consultant had scheduled a telephone consultation today several weeks ago. He telephoned her this afternoon and was unaware that she was in hospital. She is anxious to complete her 6th cycle of chemotherapy before a final CAT scan which hopefully will lead to the operation.

Her general health and fitness is good and she has no heart or lung problems. He did ask her if the oncologist had talked about immunotherapy which he hadn't. Then he mentioned about a fitness test. It's all a bit confusing and I am aware that I am rambling. The infection seems to have derailed things and we are both worried. Has anyone experience of immunotherapy following chemotheraphy?

  • Dear ionaF,

The fitness test is standard at my hospital because a cystectomy is tough - often compared to running a marathon. I passed mine despite them discovering a heart condition (since successfully treated) and came through the operation well.

I'm not very surprised the consultant wasn't aware of her being in hospital, being a surgeon, they tend only to notice people they've already operated on on the ward.

I should contact the oncologist re completing the course of chemo and also the immunotherapy question as they are in charge of that. By the way, all the various teams regularly meet in Multi Disciplinary Meetings to discuss us patients during treatment.

Re immunotherapy, after the operation I was scheduled a 12 month course of it but the oncologist stopped after 3. If you click on my name you'll see my profile for details.

I don't think the infection should have derailed things, patients often have such things during chemo so the medics are used to rejigging schedules to fit.

    Hope this helps,
