Hi
Just stated my first round of BCG. It wasn't mentioned by any of the health professionals during my treatment, but after reading articles online, I am not sure whether I can/should be drinking alcohol or caffeine during the treatment. After having a couple of pints of beer, I did notice some discomfort the following day.
I am conscious that I don't want to do anything that will impair the treatment.
Thanks in advance.
Hi 9Neil and a welcome to the group. I did not have BCG but other treatments. I did ask my urologist about beer. He said a few pints would not do any harm but advised me to try and stick to real ale and avoid the mass produced gassy stuff which may contain chemicals. We have always been advised to limit caffeine as it can irritate the bladder. I hope all goes well with your treatment. Best wishes.
Hi Neil,
I didn't drink alcohol during my BCG treatments, not sure it made any difference.
I asked my consultant about beer etc and he said a couple won't hurt. gave up caffeine as soon as diagnosed and don't miss it, I do like a beer though
As rily mentioned I avoid gassy chemical induced beers, but then I always did.
Enjoy your beer and coffee I'd say...
Trevor
I don't think it makes any difference. I cannot stop my coffee in the mornings. I have been having two mugs of coffee every morning followed by two cups of herbal tea. Furthermore, I have been, about once every two weeks or so having good single malt scotch whisky; sometimes a glass or two of wine or gin & tonic. There is no difference in symptoms. Whatever difference perceived is probably just imagination.
I have completed 12 BCG sessions and haven’t abstained completely. I think the secret is to dilute any alcohol or coffee by drinking a lot of water, lemon barley and green tea.
there are a lot of good decaf coffees around and alcohol free beers and gin if you are concerned. I don’t find the odd glass of what you enjoy will do any harm. Indeed, a glass of something helps with some of the stresses of cancer.
good luck
