Hi all
Sorry I haven't been on for a while , I took a turn for the worse.
Was heading towards my radiotherapy and suddenly ,on a Sunday morning I had a rectal bleed and collapsed. Had to be blue lighted to New Cross and into resuscitation.
My bowel had become infected and distended and there was all manner of things going wrong. My leg left blew up like a balloon that started about a month before. 3 times the size of my right leg. They said the cancer was causing the lymph nodes not to work and fluid was pooling . They then discovered anDVT in it as well.
The cancer pain and the nerve pain are too much to bare.they put a stent and net in my neck under local and a drain into my groin to drain fluid from the abcess they found in the pelvis. I will never have that done again ,I screamed and screamed at the pain ,having drains inserted into such a swollen leg
It kept getting worse infection temperature, they took me down to theatre and cleaned all of my abdomen out it was full of poo and pus and blood.
I've ended up with a stoma now and well as my illuit conduit bag for pee. The surgery scar was from my sternum to my pubic bone, must be 60 staples
.. I was in intensive care for a couple of days and had 5 bags of blood infused. Again the pain from the swollen leg is horrific. I went in to hospital on the 11th January and was discharged on the 14th February!!
Now I can't walk, I can barley stand with out a frame and help. They tell me radiotherapy will take the swelling down ,hospital have moved the date forward to the 2ndMarch ,I have a wheelchair sorted for me to get there.
Im doing bed exercises and trying to massage the leg but the pain .I can say it can bring me to my knees no problem.
Anyone got any ideas how I can help getting this leg down in size ? I am really frightened I won't walk again
The leg is huge i can't lift it with the muscles there. It's so painful to touch and i can't feel it ,but I can feel the pressure and pain , that I can feel
Now that's its secondary cancer ,has anyone been through similar?

Hello Kerry, you have indeed battled through a lot and are having a difficult recovery after leaving hospital. I hope that you are receiving adequate help whilst your mobility is so restricted. Full marks for trying to ease the problems with your leg despite the pain and swelling. Maybe, as Anya has suggested, give the MacMillan help line a call for advice on how to cope with your circumstances. I hope the radiotherapy soon makes your life a lot easier. Not long to wait! Ray
I can't offer any useful advice but my heart goes out to you for all you have been dealing with.
Just wanted to say that and hope you get some relief from the pain and suffering you are having.
It sounds absolutely awful to be going through all that.
I'm so sorry your having such a torrid time.

Dear Podperson,
I am so sorry to hear what you have been going through and hope that you can get some answers soon. I haven't any experience to offer but wonder if keeping the swollen leg raised to encourage the liquid to flow back to your core might help a bit. Usually when one has eg swollen ankles they say to keep moving so that the valves in the legs pump the stuff back but that sounds as if it would be too much for you at the moment.
Apart from that, maybe alternating ice and heat might help? And massaging from foot back to groin from time to time?
I do hope something helps. Can you get your GP to send a district nurse out?
All the very best,

I've started massaging the leg, watched a you tube video on lymphatic massage , wow its painful just to gently touch .but kept going ,I have been keeping the leg up,and drinking loads of water.
Gp has put me on gabapentin in the hope he can reduce the neuropathic pain.
I can tell you the pain when I stand on it ,everything starts to shake ,leg ,knee ,foot and burns and the pain travels into your lower back ,ive never been so scared that I won't walk again .
Hold on I keep telling myself the radiotherapy will reduce the swelling
Let's hope I'm right xx
Thanks for the support xx
