My dad completed 6 weeks of BCG immunotherapy in Dec. We were expecting a scan this month.Naively, we thought this would be not as big a deal as the turbt. But he’s just been told it’s under GA. His turbt experience wasn’t good. The aftercare was awful. He’s 88 and pretty fit but was discharged incontinent from hospital with paracetamol as a painkiller etc. Can anybody explain what this procedure will be? It’s NHS Lanarkshire and their communications is non existent. He had a grade 3 non-muscle invasive tumour. What is the usual course of treatment and procedures because we weren’t expecting another GA.
Good afternoon Roobyred. Your Dad seems to have had a rather unfortunate experience with BCG and aftercare. The procedure following this from my experience could be a rigid cystoscopy with general anaesthetic. The object will be to make a careful examination of the bladder to assess progress and possibly take a biopsy for examination. I’ve had this procedure two or three times and although causing a bit of discomfort is usually not too bad. If this is the case I wish your Dad well and hope he finds this better than before, regards, John.
Thank you. I know everybody is different, but what kind of timescales have you had 3 GAs? Does this happen after every batch of immunotherapy?
The procedures I’ve had are over a period of 5 years and the rigid cystoscopies have not applied to each BCG treatments . I’ve had number 26 BCG yesterday and have had 15 mitomycin in that 5 year period as well . Usually the use of flexible cystoscopy is used more often and this does not involve ga .Ill probably have a flexi in the next 3 months.
Hi Rooby,
Welcome to this forum but sorry to hear about your father.
I've had 18 BCGs and have had 8 biopsies under GA during this process.
In each case I went home the same day. I just had to pee a couple of times.. I didn't have any problems apart from once where my consultant took deep samples, and had blood in my wee for a while after.
I'm much younger than your father but copied quite well.
Wishing you all the best.
Trevor
Im sorry to hear what you’ve had to endure. I wish you good health.
Gosh I think we’re completely unprepared for the number and intensity of treatment. There’s nobody explaining this stuff. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Rooby,
Originally I thought everyone was having biopsies under GA after each BCG cycle, but I now understand that most have the Flexi camera instead. I'm not fussed either really. I'm now on 6 Monthly biopsies with my next one being due soon I believe.
My consultant was very good and gave me a diary of events that would take place.I should have had 21 BCGs by now, but stopped due to bad inflammation...
The day of the biopsy can be quite tiresome, as everyone gets in at 12.30 and then it's a bit of a lottery to see when you go down.
I don't actually mind being knocked out to much.
Hope your father has no issues with his biopsy.
Keep us posted.
Trevor
