My father has recently been diagnosed with bladder cancer, had 2 lumps, stage 2 and 3, he has had some surgery to remove but has refused chemotherapy due to sensitive bowels and doesn’t want live with stoma. He has been told with have 3 monthly scraping away of cancer but has not been told life expectancy. He is so forgetful that is difficult to get information from him when he meets with professionals. Is anyone able give possible timeline on how fast bladder cancer progresses?

  • Hello Oz, Welcome to the forum but sorry to hear that your father has been diagnosed with bladder cancer. Cancer in the bladder is one of the more treatable cancers, although as each patient presents symptoms and general health (including age and gender) differently, life expectancy is very often difficult to judge even by the health professionals. I  had a 7cm  lesion removed in stages, firstly by radiotherapy in 2017, then by two TURBTs in 2018. I am not symptom free and the cancer is slowly growing back. Despite this, and being on palliative care since 2019, I am still here in 2026, living independently, driving etc and enjoying getting old. I'm now 76 and only have to put up with having a permanent urethral catheter and a bag (since late 2018). Catheter is changed every 12 weeks or when blocked. No medication or scheduled reviews either. Being younger and cancer free is of course much more enjoyable but my current lot is bearable. You will find that everyone on here has a different story, whether they've had major surgery to remove the bladder, chemo, BCG instillations or various combinations of treatment. Morale can take a battering and that's where this forum is a huge help. Also, MacMillan offers further guidance through services accessible by scrolling down where the details can be found. Best wishes to your dad and yourself as you proceed through this phase.  Ray x
