Hello there
I had some very sad news today from the hospital. They are going to discharge him as they can do no more for him. They cannot cure the UTI infection and now he has c.diff.
I'm waiting to hear from someone to let me know where he will be going. I don't think he meets the criteria for a Hospice.
It is all so overwhelming for me. Out flat is too small and I am unable to care for him at home. And I do not understand what happens regarding nursing homes and their fees.
To think he nearly made it to have bladder removed just a short while ago.
Hello FloGlow, Sorry to hear that you've received such sad news. Palliative care covers a range of care regimes, from care at home if the patient is semi-independent, to care in a hospice if the patient needs nearly constant monitoring, to specialist hospital care if nearly constant medical care is required. I hope that when you are contacted these or other options will be clarified, together with some discussion about the best future course taking your circumstances in to account. You may be able to gain further insight beforehand by contacting MacMillan help using the options usually seen at the base of these forum pages (just scroll down if on a laptop. Not sure about using a smartphone as I do not own one). For example: The help line is available 7 days a week between 8am - 8pm
I send my best wishes and hope that the path ahead can be made as gentle as possible for you both. Ray x
So sad to hear this, I hope arrangements can be made to make him (and his loved ones) as comfortable as possible x
What a blow for you, having got so far with your husband’s treatment. I would be surprised if he doesn’t qualify for some level of hospice care - certainly worth pushing for that. Hopefully someone from the palliative care team will be in touch to assist. Very best wishes to you both for the difficult times ahead.
Thank you so much for your kind reply.
Apparently he doesn't meet the Hospice criteria and hopefully the Palliative Care Team are contacting me on Monday. I all seems so surreal and it has all happened so quickly in less than a month.
Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts and wishes.
As others have said really I can't add much more other than to say sorry it has gotten to this point.
It seems as you have a fairly good grasp of the situation as best you can, and are as ready as you can be for the rest of the journey ahead.
And absolutely support and great memories will all help you all along the road as much as it can.
And we all are here for you to listen to or even to vent towards should you need too.
Stay strong and best wishes that he can be made as comfortable as possible, look into every option no matter how slim it may seem.
Hospices do great work but if anything like our local hospice though space is limited and the waiting list is usually long, and they don't have the funding to keep enough beds open sadly.
We got my dad into Myton Hospice for pallative care and then managed to get him transferred and a hospital bed sorted at my mum and step dads house for his last few days to a week, we were just glad he was well enough to be moved and the Macmillan nurses were amazing in their support to my mum and step dad and the care of my dad whilst at home. Maybe we were lucky but it worked out the best it could.
I also have a friend that works at Ashgate hospice in the kitchen, so also know the good work a lot of these places do, yes so many struggle now due to funding and raising enough donations.
