Good morning everyone, I hope you’re all keeping safe and well today Heart️

I’m relatively new here with this being only my second post…Today I am seeking a little advice, mostly reassurance I suppose and anyone in a similar position as my dad who would be willing to share their own experience / journey, I’ll forever be grateful.

My 68yo dad had his biopsy results appointment yesterday, these results were from his very first TURBT he had done in November 25 to remove a “large” tumor, it was at the time a complete resection but from today he’s been told they’ll need to go back in for a second look as the mass was large and want to be confident all abnormal cells are removed , they’ve said it’s superficial, high grade, papillary carcinoma but want to go deeper and see more muscle…dads second TURBT has been booked for Monday next week, I feel relieved they’re doing this by physically removing everything and more…I know I shouldn’t but I’ve googled and looked on social media pages and I’ve read some horror stories which has shaken me to the core…I came away from that appointment yesterday with relief, relief from just having answers and not necessarily having the very worst case scenario that my brain made it out to be all these weeks and months ago but I feel as though I’m downhill descending the more I read now, I’ve resumed back to panic mode and the anxiety has gotten bad again, I’m just so desperate for my poor dad be okay and have a fighting chance at beating this!!

Thank you guys so much for everything xx

  • Hi Indi,

Sorry to hear that your father needs a second TURBT, but this is very common.

I myself had two and remember feeling panick at the time... The second TURBT seems to be so common I really don't know why the consultant's don't just mention it at the beginning.

One of the best bits of advice I got from this forum was to stay off Google, so can only suggest the same.

Hopefully your dad will get his results back quite quickly after the TURBT and you will know what treatment plans etc is needed.

    Wishing you all the best.

    Trevor

  • Hi Indigogemini,As Trevor has said it’s very common to have a second TURBT so try not to worry that your dad has to go back.At the second one they remove all the tumour if possible and take more biopsies. Then all the results are looked at and some form of treatment is decided. These early weeks after diagnosis are not easy it’s a lot of waiting but soon your dad will be able to start treatment.Love Jane x

  • We are all familiar with the anxious waiting. As others have said, second TURBT is standard with high grade. They want to check the staging, to confirm that it is superficial & not involving muscle. That will determine what treatment(s) are most appropriate to offer. Your Dad may be given choices to consider - many of us here have been in that position and can give personal experiences. Caught early, BC is very treatable. Hope all goes well for your Dad.

  • I was about the same age as your dad when, in 2017, I was told that the blood in urine problems I had been having for years may be 'something else,' not just my kidney stones playing up. Bladder cancer was suddenly on the agenda. Visibility was very poor during the flexible cystoscopy but a 'small' lesion was spotted. A TURBT was scheduled, then cancelled because a heart murmur was discovered during pre-op. If you are interested, click on the green icon next to a forum member's name to obtain further details of our experience with BC if we have written a 'profile.'  However, like many of us on here, I've had to make 'accommodation' for bladder cancer in my life. My lesion proved to be 7cm, requiring two TURBTs after initial radiotherapy. I'm still here, living independently, driving etc. in 2026. My treatment regime has been 'palliative' since early 2019 i.e. symptom driven, with no regular reviews. Take each day as it comes is probably the best advice that you'll see us giving, as well as staying away from Google. This forum is very good at providing support, particularly when the BC path gives us a mental battering. Best wishes to you and your dad.  Ray
