So I had my meeting with the consultant yesterday and he has said the cancer has gone since I had the radical cystectomy. But and there is always a but...cancer was in my lymph nodes so he has recommended chemo.
I'm so relieved it's gone. Has anyone had chemo like this as a mop up or just in case scenario??
Any info on what it's like to have chemo and if I will lose my hair ?
I have to wait for the oncology appt but this group is so knowledgeable and honest and your advice Is always what means the most
Hope you are all doing well xx
Hi Podperson . All sounds very positive but a slight hitch with the lymph nodes. I had six weeks of chemo. The regimen for bladder cancer is generally Gemcitabine and Cisplatin (Gem/Cis) or similar alternatives. I tolerated it quite well with no nasty side effects but some people have some forms of nausea You should get pills to counteract this. The drugs usually used for bc are not the type where hair loss is guaranteed. Some people report hair thinning, but we rarely hear of complete loss in this group. It didn't affect my hair although mine is very short. Overall, the odds are in your favour. Best wishes.
Hi there
That's a bit of good news
I had chemo before my rc. Its designed to destroy any cancer in or around the nodes. I was booked in for 6 sessions but only had 4 due to the chemo giving me clots in my arms.
If it is gem/cis regime you will have a long day and a short day.
Cisplatin day is normally 7 hours due to the other fluids you are given on that day.
Gemsis day is a lot shorter its around 45 mins.
Mine was Thursday long day
The following Thursday was a sort day
Then you miss a week and start the cycle again.
Two days prior to a session you should have you blood taken and blood pressure checked. They will also weigh you as the chemo is made up for each individual by their height and weight.
Side effects will vary person to person . I was generally wore out and really tired. Some side effects will require you to contact the chemo people, you will be given a list of these and a contact number.
I had hair thining at the sides and some on top but that was the least of my worries. I would have gladly run about with no hair just to get rid of the cancer.
Best wishes
Mark
