Blood in catheter after TURBT

Hi folks

So, my hubbie had a TURBT on 30th May. His bladder was perforated and he has a balloon catheter and external catheter in place. He's passed tiny clot-like blobs (more streaky than lumpy) and the last few days, throughout the day, his bag is mixed with blood (looks like orangey rosé wine).  I know that some blood is expected but I'm confused as to wear it's coming from, as I would have thought the kidney tubes would go into the balloon bladder and the external catheter tube also into the balloon bladder? Where would the blood be from I'm wondering?

Anyone else experienced this?

Thank you

  • Hi  . It's not unusual to see signs of blood or clots a couple of weeks after a TURBT as the scab on the wound breaks away as part as the natural healing process. Any longer then it may be wise to check with the medics. Has your husband got a CNS to call ? In the meantime it is important for him to drink lots of water to flush things out. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • As rily says, some blood and clots are quite common after a TURBT particularly during the healing process. If the catheter becomes blocked for more than an hour or so, seek medical advice from your husband's medical team or dial 111. If he is registered with the District Nurses they can often assist and/or advise on how to proceed. Depending on how much work was done on the bladder during the TURBT, some bleeding and clots can randomly occur for quite a few weeks after the procedure. With luck, your husband's consultant will remove the catheter once the bladder has recovered sufficiently and demonstrated normal control. Have you been able to obtain a MacMillans booklet on the subject of bladder cancer? They are available at no cost and give an informative run-down of the terminology as well as a general review of the subject. Each patient will experience differences in their path through bladder cancer but the booklet helps to explain the possibilities/options in a calm and undramatic way. Good luck!
