I've had an awful last 24 hrs. I had my 2nd BCG treatment yesterday morning and the nurse had real trouble inserting the catheter as I think there was some inflammation.
I felt fine until after my first pee and then my whole body went into spasm with very intense pain despite having oramorph, Buprenorphine patches, hyoscine (buscopan) we couldn't get it under control. I was drinking gallons of water and good old barley water to try and flush it through.
Every 10 minutes for 6 hours I was rushing to the toilet and had huge spasms each time. All the hairs on my arms and face were prickling and standing up and after 5pm I started to get all the flu symptoms. By 9pm I had a temperature of 41 degrees and was totally burning up and shaking and my eldest daughter had just got in from work, saw me and called an ambulance out.
The ambulance stayed for a good hour or so and decided it was too risky and germy to take me in to hospital and desperately tried to get my temperature down before they left with strict instructions if it went back up again to call back and get help.
What a difference from my first treatment! I was absolutely fine, hardly any problems at all just mad nasty dreams.
I've been left today with some pain, thank goodness the spasms are calming down a little and I'm stuck in bed with flu symptoms, headache, sore throat, body pains and my temperatures come down a bit.
I'm left wondering what this means going forward now? Still got 4 treatments to go of my induction. I had rung my CNS in the afternoon due to the amount of pain I was in before all the other symptoms kicked in during the evening and she said if they have similar problems next week they might have to abandon this treatment and go down another route, but what route!?
Feeling very scared, fed up and very rubbish, will have to chat with my CNS on Monday and let her know what's happened I guess. Just wanted to get treatment done and dusted and get back to work and a little bit of normality.
Booooo!
Hi Kitty
I've been through the BCG process (15 instillations) and found it wasn't the same each time.
1-4 were OK with just urgency, frequency, painful urination and feeling hot for a few hours starting around 6 hours post instillation. No. 5 gave me bad flu like symptoms - i.e. sweats (high temperature) and chills which took me out of action for ~4 days. No. 6 went in a week later though cloudy urine and very high lymphocytes, and back to the mild-ish symptoms of 1-4.
The rest have been generally the same as 1-4, but some symptoms like flank pain and headache started creeping in, and retention for the 2 hours post instillation wasn't as easy. 15 is the schedule maximum with my Trust.
Have had some issues with cloudy urine since No.5, and recently had stale (brown) blood on a couple of visits to the loo, but I have recently been informed I have a duplex kidney which I will have investigated along with a blue light cystoscopy in ~ 1 weeks time. My suspicion with this blood is it that its being held up in the second ureter of the duplex kidney, which may have a stone blocking it. I was admitted ~25 years ago for a stone which cleared without me noticing that I had passed it so must presume this Trust (different from my current one) just saw urine transfer in the non impacted ureter and thought all was OK. They didn't report a duplex kidney.
Hope your journey improves, and its different for us all. The above just outlines my experience with high temperatures and that with me it was only the one instillation that has been an issue in this regard
Thankyou Rob!
I'm definitely going to have another chat with her.
Fingers crossed it was just my body going 'wow' this time and hopefully the next one will be not as bad!? I have to say though it has been a bit unnerving.
At least we know it's doing something I suppose, I really wanna try to get through the treatments though as I'm not sure what else they would do and I'm definitely not up for loosing my bladder completely yet.
Good luck with your treatments and I hope you have an easier ride!
Let's fight the good fight all together!!!
Kitty xx
