Hubby had an ultrasound today looking for bladder cancer .
He was told that they couldn't see anything sinister but sometimes the ultrasound doesn't pick up ' flat ' tumours ?
How accurate are ultrasounds for detecting bladder cancer ?
And a bit of background
He is 60 - recently had a urine infection - first test showed high white blood count which is understandable ?
10 days later the second urine test showed the white blood count had quadrupled but no growth
Because of his age he has had to be fast tracked for tests for bladder cancer.
Because of the uti he was put on the antibiotic Nitrofurantoin and I have read that can cause a high white blood count ( he finished the antibiotics 5 days before the second urine test .
Hi Worried03 and welcome to this group but see you are no stranger to the community. Sorry to hear about your husband's concerns. Ultrasounds are not the best at picking up BC. They cannot pick up early stage or CIS. The true diagnostic tool to check for any abnormalities is a flexible cystoscopy. A camera in to the bladder which should be the next step. Has this been mentioned? Best wishes.
Hi there and welcome to the group
I had a number of uti's but have never had an ultrasound. I firstly had a ct scan followed by a cystoscopy as rily has posted. It's probably the best way to determine if there's anything there. I also asked for my prostrate to be checked and this was done at the doctors surgery.
I hope you find some answers soon and keep us posted of your husbands progress.
Best wishes
Mark
Hi Worried03 . That is standard procedure so good to hear things are happening soon. The camera is a fairly quick and painless procedure. Slightly uncomfortable but your husband will be able to see for himself if anything untoward is going on in the bladder and the doctor or nurse will talk him through it. Best wishes,
I had a similar route to diagnosis, I was sent for an ultrasound and they did find a growth. Then a few weeks later had the flexible cystoscopy and ct scan which confirmed a tumour.
Please try not to worry at this point, take every appointment as it is and I hope your next one is positive.
Good luck
Hi Worried03,There may be a blockage in the bladder or an enlarged prostate. The trabeculation is where the bladder walls become thicker and look irregular with muscular bands..The bladder won’t be as elastic as normal and this makes it harder for it to fill and particularly to empty. If it doesn’t empty properly you can get infections.I had this due to chronic bladder disease prior to cancer.I hope this helps.Jane
