Advice after TURBT

Good afternoon all

I was just wondering if anyone had felt the same after a TURBT. I had my first one almost three weeks ago, I felt almost human again after a few days. Now feeling absolutely terrible again, bladder pain, pain on urinating and an almost sciatica pain. I don't think I have slept more than 2 hours before having to urinate again since it has been done. I have been to docs and urine came back as no infection found, seen a physio for the pain down my leg and she has given me some gentle exercises until after I see the consultant in a weeks time. She wants them to be aware and maybe offer some reasoning for the pain before exploring further.

Am I being unrealistic in thinking I would be feeling better now? Can anyone give any advice as to alleviating the pain without anymore painkillers?

Thank you in advance

  • Hi  . Sorry to hear you are still in a lot of discomfort following your recent TURBT. It takes up to six weeks for the wound to completely heal and various aches and pains are not uncommon. Good to know you are clear of infection. It is always possible to aggravate the wound if doing anything too strenuous too early. Hopefully you will get some answers when you have your meeting next week where you should be given a stage and grade and plan the way forward. If pain becomes worse before then give the hospital a ring. In the meantime, it is important to keep drinking lots of water even though you are going frequently. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  •    I am afraid it’s early days for you, however if you are concerned speak with your specialist nurse, who can hopefully reassure, or take other action. Don’t over do it, esp lifting anything heavy. And push the fluids. Leo

  • Thanks Rily

I think maybe I have overdone it feeling so well to start with.

I will up the water again I must admit I have slipped back into old ways of not a great deal.

Im sure I will feel much better after the consultant appointment and hopefully having a contact I can speak to for things like this. And obviously having a plan in place!

    Thanks again

  • Thanks Leo

I think I was hoping for a miracle! I do think I originally overdid it and am paying for it now. I am hoping to get a CSN at my next appointment at the minute I only have GP or day surgery to contact.

I also need to up fluids again after falling back into old habits.

    Thanks again!

  • Hi Nananaps

I personally was still in some discomfort 4 weeks after and some cramps after that the odd day if I’d been a been more active and had a heavy fluid intake that day the bladder is a muscle in a way  and can get sore with use the stretching and contracting but unfortunately it’s absolutely essential to keep the fluid intake up things do settle after time hopefully things start to improve in the coming weeks

  • Be carful you have had surgery. You need to pace yourself.

  • Thanks Ste

It's reassuring to hear that others have been in the same boat. I keep having to remind myself that it was a surgery and healing takes time. I think with no war wounds you can become a little blasé. I am also terrible at drinking water! Always have been. Trying to up the intake again and hopefully things will settle.

  • Well done, all of this stuff is really serious, look after yourself

  • Hi

I only had the one and didn't have any bad side effects. However, my urologist did say it could take six weeks to clear up.

It doesn't matter where you go, there you are
  • Hi Nananaps

Regarding the drinking, it may be helpful to drink Robinsons lemon barley water rather than just water, and avoid caffeine, fizzy drinks and alcohol for a while. The lemon barley water variety has more barley (~4%) than the others (~1%) and this seems to help calm the bladder.
