Hi everyone,
Just looking to see if anyone has any experience of an alternative preventative treatment for T1 grade Bladder Cancer?
Long story short, my Dad recently had cancer cells removed for Stage 1 Bladder Cancer that was non-invasive and had not spread to any muscle and remained incitu (thankfully). However, having tried to undergo the BCG Chemotheraphy for preventative purposes, he was not able to retain this. The first attempt, the treatment just flowed straight out from the catheter and the second attempt, his bladder just rejected it and went into spasm - the consultant administering the treatment was not able to close off the catheter in time so as to prevent it leaving and again it was lost.
He has just had his first follow up 3 months on and needs to have a further biopsy as they picked up what they think is a small polyps.
I am just concerned as he is not able to contact the BCG treatment directly into his bladder and to see if there is any alternative options we can try for preventative measures. Its so hard to have to constantly have to have biopsys and surgeries, especially when last time he developed a urine infection that quickly turned to Sepsis - thankfully he managed to fight this, but the thought of this reoccurring again absolutely terrifies me :(
Thanks so much!
Hi AngelGirl and welcome to the group. Sorry to hear your Dad has had difficulty with the BCG treatment. BCG is immunotherapy treatment. Some people who have had difficulty with it or were it hasn't worked have tried Mitomycin or Cisplatin chemotherapy but these are administered in the same way as BCG. We have had members who were unable to tolerate any and rather than have complete bladder removal just have regular monitoring with flexible cystoscopies. I hope Dad's team can come up with a solution. Best wishes.
My OH had 6 BCG, check turned into a second TURBT as they found a new papilloma. Offered more BCG, RC or Mitomycin. Opted for Mitomycin. They tried to give it heated which if tolerated is supposed to be potentially more effective.
His bladder dramatically spasmed rejecting it heated. The consultant told the nurses to try again the next week with it cold/room temp.. I'm not sure he managed to retain it for the time [?1 hour?] beyond the first or second one of six. It certainly got progressively harder to hold it.
But he still has had no recurrence in now getting on for six years and celebrated his 80th birthday last summer.. Albeit he was G3 PTa not stage 1. But his bladder was completely coated in growths at the start.
I don't know if anti-spasmodic drugs could be given before the treatment to aid retention, you could ask?
best wishes
