Dad has suspected bladder cancer

For more than 6 months my dad (72) has been treated for what they presumed was a UTI without doing any further investigation, fast forward to 18th December when he was supposed to have a urology investigation and they discovered he was in acute kidney failure due to what they think is a tumour in his bladder. He was in hospital over Christmas and they did a CT scan and ultrasound while he was there and discovered aggressive lesions on his pubic bone. They discharged him on Boxing day having gad bilateral nephrostomies, with a TURBT scheduled for 13th January. I was surprised at the wait but was told by the consultant at this stage it's unlikely to make a difference to the prognosis. Since being home he's deteriorated rapidly, he's barely eating, incredibly unsteady on his feet and sleeping for most of the time. The district nurse did an assessment with him and they ticked that he's perfectly fine taking care of himself which is unbelievable. I live 3 hours away, but having been with him over the weekend I'm incredibly worried he won't even get to the TURBT, but as we don't have an official diagnosis I don't know who I should be contacting. We're lucky to have family close by that are doing what they can, and I have a brother that lives 30 mins away but his first baby is due in two weeks. I feel so lost at the moment, we lost our mum to lung cancer in 2018, I can't believe we're going through this again Broken heart

  • Hi

So sorry to hear the situation you are in. The TURBT isn't that far away. It will give your father and your family a better understanding of what's going on. Its a stressful time I know but at least they are now acting on it..

I always say its important to keep positive.  I am only recently a member of this forum but I have found the experiences of its members a great comfort.

I hope all goes well for TURBT and remember to stay positive

  • How stressful for you. I'm not sure, but probably the best person to contact is your dad's GP.  That might also be the best way to get transport arranged for the TURBT to ensure he gets there. He should also have someone at home with him when he is recovering from that. Best wishes.
