I was diagnosed with:
a. 2cm sliding hiatus Hernia
b. Diverticulitis
c. Anaemia
in approx February of 2024
I was further diagnosed with:
pT1 (= early stage) G3 " fast growing & aggressive NMIBC ( Non Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer)
in approx March of 2024
( i'me now into my 9 th Month of my " bladder cancer journey")
I "completed a 6 week Induction course ( of Immunotherapeutic " treatment".. brief comformablish instillations of 50 ml BCG) vaccine spec
BCG1 Minimal side effects
BCG2 Minimal side effect
BCG3 More pronounced side effects
BCG 4 Back to minimal Side effects
BCG 5 Back to more pronounced side effects
& BCG 6. More Pronounced & longer lasting side effects culminating in what I could only explain/justify/ self diagnose/ assume was UTI ( Urethral Tract Infection!! ( AKA cystitis !!)
( MUCH MUCH MORE THAN MERE DISCOMFORT.. and that's an understatement !!)
This last (above) BCG ( No 6!) instillation was on Weds 02 October 2024.
Two weeks ago !!
Last Monday 14 October /2024 ( 2 days ago !!) I managed , by circuitous and long waits on the telephone ( and events rally GP call back)to secure a prescription of a 7 day course 2 pills each day 14 x 500 mg tablets ( medium strength) Ciproflxacin tablets) ( Very very "strong" antibiotics !! ... for " severe infections!!)
Yesterday I decided NOT to start take the course of the above strong antibiotics ( too fearful of the MANY side effects- nausea being a common side effect because ...
Today Weds 16 October I attended my 3'rd " Preassessment/Clinic re My fitness ( or otherwise !) for General Anaesthesia ( for a " rapid" rigid Cystocopy just (a " look see" which might turn out to be of necessity a " full blown TURBT !! ( removal of any tumour(s) recurring since my last 2 x TURBT's 3 months and 5 months ago !!
This appointment today lasted almost 2 hrs !! ( I hour of which was trying to answer 8 pages of questionnaire !!!!!)The second nurse couldn't equip me with a date for my Rigid cystoscopy operation/ procedure/ surgery. ("That has to be from " scheduling department" !! I'd been led to believe that I would be given a date for my surgery/procedure / operation. I need to organise my life outside of cancer care !!!! The meeting concluded with the nurse saying" There's the tube and cup for your urine sample .. give it to the receipt ionise on your way out " I stood up to leave and said" I really can't be bothered !! and left the department appointment.
I AM NOT HARD WORK !! I just fear that I'm no longer on " fast track"
I think that the many REDUNDANT, IRRELEVANT, TIMEWASTING questions on the 8 page check questionnaire a patient is presented with upon arrival for a Pre Surgical assessment should BE ELIMINATED !!!!!!!!
Should I register a formal complaint with the UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL TRUST ??? ( I am very very tempted to register a formal complaint !!)
Hi BC69yrs . The fast tracking is usually only the early part of diagnosis when you are first referred to urology. Once the initial TURBT is done, then things tend to move at a fairly moderate pace. Pre ops need to be thorough in order to ensure you are fit enough for general anaesthetic. If you are concerned about your care you could try contacting PALS at your hospital who would look in to your case for you and maybe give you some answers. Best wishes.
thanks for your very logical exposition
( I freely admit that I'm freaking out here.. and starting to drink ( which I shouldn't .. and I haven't had a " good drink" for 3 months now !! NB I'm not an alcoholic!!) .. just need some relief from the stress of it all.. and the possible return to my previously fantastically regular urinary contiinence & regular bowel habit !!
I'm still thinking that I WILL " have a go" at/to the University Hospital Trust .. to try and insist that they need to cut down the number of questions in " their" 8 page Surgical preassessment questionnaire. MANY OF the questions are Irrelevant/culturally inappropriate/ and just plain INFANTILE !! ( & very, very time consuming to answer ( with verity !!) as well !!)
What's/Who is "PALS?"??
I'm 100% certain I'm concerned about my care !! ( I'm still actively suffering the cystitis I am suffering from !!)
( I'm hoping PALS is the committee that ( they who design " camels ") -- that insist on including MANY redundant, IRRELEVANT, Culturally inappropriate and infantile questions on their ridiculous questionnaires !!
Rant Over !!
Thanks for you replying anyway.
I WON"T stop being vociferous about MY ISSUE until PALS accept it is an issue of their creation !!
Cheers
Hi bc69yrs,
I understand your frustration regarding the filling in the forms. I've been getting knocked out for a biopsy every three months and have to fill in the same form every three months which is then followed up with a telephone call to discuss said questionnaire before my op.
I've filled in the same form 7 times in 22 months... Although mine is online, so might be quicker than a paper copy.
I did ask and was told they need to do it before any GA so I just go along with it all now.
Not everything makes sense to me, for example I had to give a blood test the day before my biopsy, despite the fact the results wouldn't have been returned before my scheduled op time. I couldn't see the point but it was on the list of things needed to be done. I've not had bloods taken for my 4 previous biopsies, so I guess it depends on what nurse takes the pre assessment phone call.
However, I try not to let it bother me, everything is a tick box and I think they're covering all avenues.
I know it's not easy, with all the waiting around etc too not get frustrated.
I hope you enjoyed your drink and are a bit more chilled now.
Take care.
Trevor
PALS is Patient Advisory [i think] and Liaison [I think] Service. Anyway they are not quite a complaints department but supposed to take down your issues and pass them to the right people in the hospital. A lot of them are volunteers. And they cannot force departments or doctors to answer satisfactorily if at all, But they do often provide some help, so worth a try.
One thing they are not guilty of is drafting the infuriating form you were given, that might be the anaesthetists' department.
I will write N/A for Not Applicable next to any overly stupid questions on forms I am given. I've not once had any comeback on doing so.
Hi Denby , I think you are right about the forms, they can be very frustrating , repeating things time and time again .The questions apply to the experience of being operated on and anaesthetised. I suppose if you think about it, the anaesthetist meets you very briefly on the day of your operation. They and the theatre staff need to know as much about you as possible, for safety sake. I am not sure there would be a shorter version of questionnaire tbh.
Much love Angela x
Thanks Trevor ... for such a detailed reply - and, thanks again for just the pertinent details too !!! so.... bloody succinct 'an all ( a cockney expression !! lol) 'll probably follow much of your excellent advice
Also I MUST apologise to all on here for my original post and it's overtly attacking display of outrage/ anger/ anxiety attack/ frustration: I
or
' wotever ( another cockney expression that covers a multitude of my many other " "sins, transgressions/ inappropriate remarks I committed to in my original post " I hope ...I'd be delighted if all of you accept my apologyall accept my apology ??
Yep I did have a good drink last night. Over a 10 hour period I consumed almost 1/3 of a 75cl bottle of GOOD brandy .. and it has had two great effects:
1. It seems to have completely cleared ( hopefully) my severe cystitis !! ( The Irish word "Whisky" means/translates as " Water of Life"
2. I'm much cheerier !! ( not deliriously happy or any fink ( another cockney expression) = your expression was " chilled")
I hate using the expression but 1. & 2. are a "win win situation" ( an upper middle class expression !! lol)
Cheers (more correctly Slainca ( sp?) Irish for cheers !!
I'm gonna ring my CNS ( Oncology) next: I won't be confrontational or rude aggressive etc etc !! I just stand the best chance of getting a confirmed date for TURBT 3 from her.. that's what I want and need !!
Bloods for grouping are standard prior to any surgical procedure, just in case they need to give you a transfusion. Whilst I understand that this is relatively uncommon with TURBT, it is still a possibility, and its always best to be transfused group specific blood. In respect to blood group, the result is usually turned around within a day, but the result is only valid for ~10 days from sample.
