BCG Treatment & Stinging Eyes

I have written a few times about my progress through BCG treatment. I completed my second round of maintenance treatments around 2 1/2 weeks ago. The burning and urgency are gradually improving which is to be expected, I think, and my energy level also is (very gradually) improving. I experience stinging and watery eyes every day, which may also be related to poor sleep many nights. Unfortunately, I tend to experience side effects from almost any medication or treatment probably more than most. Any suggestions on how I can lessen or eliminate these eye related symptoms?

  • Hi CDN, I dont have any answers I am afraid, but i do have the watery eyes since I started BCG. I just bathe them to stop them getting sticky, I dont know how to stop it happening. I may ask the nurse next week .Hope you get an answer

  • Hi CDN

I’m sure that Teasswill will be along in a minute to help as well - we’re both / used to be optometrists. I believe BCG can cause dry eye side effects - I know it sounds odd, but one of the symptoms of dry eyes is watery eyes.

Best to have this confirmed by your local optometrist - most areas have a PEARS / MECS health check NHS covered scheme whereby dry eyes could be confirmed.

Applying a heated eye mask (the gold standard one is the ‘Eyebag’) to closed eyelids, twice a day for 10 minutes, can help to soften and loosen any blocked oil in the glands along the eyelid that supply oil into your tears. After you take off the eye mask, use a clean finger to gently massage your eyelids towards your lashes – this helps to get the oil flowing from the glands.

Using preservative‑free dry eye drops can also ease the symptoms. These drops can be used as often as needed, depending on your symptoms.

    Best wishes

  • I would definitely visit your optometrist for a diagnosis & recommendation for appropriate treatment, in case it is some sort of infection.

As an aside, I am a contact lens wearer with dry eyes - I use hycosan night eye ointment which has been great. Less hassle than the eye bag, although that is good too.

  •   hi I had problems with dry itchy eyes on BCG. I would say it affected my sight slightly. Before BCG I had a baseline scan of the eyes, I will have yo see what the results are when I go for my next scan soon. Good luck, lots of side effects with BCG as we all know. Leo

  • Hey I had the same thing and then red bloodshot eyes and blurred vision. Eye clinic put me on over the counter infected eye drops.Basically conjunctivitis treatment. Cleared up after a week.
