Waiting times for Cystoscopy after BCG

Hi all,

I had my TURBT in May and had to return to hospital the following month for a re resection of the bladder as there was no muscle in the biopsy specimen taken in May. Biopsy results showed a high risk G3pT1 and although the Consultant was steering me towards a Cystectomy I opted to give BCG a chance first.

i had my first BCG instillation on Wednesday this week. The same day I received an appointment for a Flexi Cystoscopy on 20th  November which is a full 9 weeks after the end of the BCG induction course. This, to me, seems a very long delay and I would be grateful for the views and opinions of others who have had similar experiences to mine.

Also, I’d like to hear what others feel about the side effects of the BCG and when they kicked in. I suppose they will affect different people in different ways but my first one, as expected, wasn’t a problem and was trouble free.

Cheers everyone.

  • Hi  . BCG treatment usually causes some inflammation and so they need to let your bladder recover before checking so they have a clear view. 6-8 weeks is about average so 9 weeks is not uncommon. There are several threads running at the moment regarding side effects so you may find it useful to browse some recent threads. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi Peleton,

    Welcome to this group.

I would say 9 weeks after the last instillation sounds about right. Well was for me anyway. My Last instillation was 31/07 and my next biopsy is 11/10..

And my previous instillations and biopsies seem to be similar time differences.

As Rily said I think this is to give the time for the bladder to heal.

Your maintenance BCG will probably start quite soon after your cystcopy.

With regards to side effects, these seem to differ considerably.per person. I've been quite lucky really. No problems with the induction, but now have urgency and fatigue for about 24 hours.

Wishing you all the best for the rest of your BCGs and your cystcopy.

    Take care.

    Trevor

  • Many thanks riley. I’ll check out the other threads.

  • Hi Peleton, welcome

I finished my bcg induction on 18th July and have my flexi cystoscopy booked for 3rd September, which is just short of an 8 week gap.

As for side effects, everybody reacts differently but mine haven't been too bad. Bit of urgency to pee, fatigue, and slight stinging for a day or two.

Good luck on your journey and hope your treatment goes well

    Anne x

  • Many thanks Trevor. That’s good to know.

Good luck with your continuing treatment.

Good luck with your continuing treatment.

  • Good Morning and welcome Peleton, eight weeks after completing BCG instillations I had my flexible cystoscopy. Side effects vary from person to person. From my perspective it was frequent visits to the loo during the night. General discomfort for a couple of days but tolerable. I imagine the bacteria hunting down and killing the cancer meanies in my bladder.  No pain No gain! General discomfort is worth it hopefully when you get the all clear. Robinsons Barley Water( original) is a must to calm the bladder. Good luck Garviv

  • Hi   I think everyone reacts differently. My SX started around BCG 4 of induction, and these were mainly frequency of urination, and pain from an enlarged prostate. I am taking some drugs for these recommended by my Consultant. Very regular urination limits what I can do and where I can go, the prostate problem can be quite sore. Buy many just sail though treatment OK. Best of British with your treatment, Leo
