Hi all. I wonder if anybody can help.

Nearly two years since my cystectomy I am suddenly  getting some itching around the area where my bag is. Not horrendous but annoying

Has anybody else had this and if so what did you do? Thanks. Jenny

  • Hi Jenny

I have had this from time to time over the last 4 years, and yes it is very annoying! I’m presuming that you haven’t changed the make/type of bag you use? If not, sometimes companies can change the formulations which are used in the production of the bag and this can lead to issues.

My go to remedy is calamine lotion to soothe and calm the skin-sometimes I find I I’ve scratched myself so much around the edges of the bag it actually bleeds. I put calamine lotion on a cotton pad and gently wipe round the whole area where it’s itchy and sometimes raw. Then I use a hairdryer on a very low setting, well away from the skin, to dry the area thoroughly. I find this soothes everything virtually instantly and allows any broken skin to heal.

If you continue to have issues it may be worthwhile looking into an alternative hypo allergenic bag which might help. They are very gentle on the skin.

  • Thanks Sarah. I changed a few months ago but went back to my original as they seemed to start the itching. I will get some Calamine. Jenny xx

  • I really hope you find it helps you, Jenny. It was a cheap and simple solution for me so I hope it could be the same for you.
