Hi to all you lovely people, I am a new member and I come to ask and hopefully find out what to expect on my journey.
My journey to cancer diagnosis began back in mid October until my planned biopsy procedure on the 12th Feb, it was during this procedure that they found a tumor in my bladder at which point the went on to carry out TURBT. I was told that they had managed to remove most of the tumor and will now have to wait on the biopsy results before moving forward with a treatment plan. Since having the TURBT all the symptoms that I was suffering from have completely gone which is such a great feeling. What I would like to ask and hopefully maybe get an answer 1) what would be the reason behind not being able to remove the full tumor? 2) I suffer from heart disease with my most recent heart attack back in June 2023, because of this urology were very reluctant to put me under General anaesthetic as where cardiology, does anyone know if any of the treatments that will be presented to myself moving forward have any effects on my heart condition overall? After an 18yr journey with heart disease as you can imagine my heart isn't exactly at its strongest, nor is my heart muscle and I take lots of medication. That's about it and thank you for reading my story.
Hi Theglobetrotter and welcome to this friendly group. I am sure you will get plenty of support here as you move forward. A follow up TURBT is fairly standard and not usually as severe as the first. Some types of tumour are more difficult to remove in one go and so they have the follow up just to check and take further biopsies which will give a more accurate diagnosis. We have had people here with heart conditions. In these cases they have had the procedure under a spinal block rather than GA. Something you may like to ask about. When all the results are in you should be given a stage and grade which then dictates the next step. I hope all goes well. Best wishes.
Thank you very much for your reply, I actually had an appointment for a biopsy back in beginning of November. This was cancelled due to my most recent heart attack as G/A would have been to much of a risk at that point, I didn't know spinal block would have been another option it it certainly never discussed with myself.
Thanks again
Hello Theglobetrotter, welcome to our friendly group. I had 3 TURBT's carried out in 2020 and on each one I was offered a spinal block. I chose GA each time but it was good to get an option. However on subsequent biopsies I was never offered that option. I don't know if it's down to the different hospital rules and regs. I wish you well on your journey.
Hi Theglobetrotter,Welcome to our friendly group.I’m sorry to hear about your heart problems.I’ve been left with some heart conduction problems as a result of auto immune pericarditis which kept recurring. It is worth asking about a spinal anaesthetic as this was suggested to me on one occasion.I would have opted for it but the surgery was cancelled anyway due to the cardiac problems.I used to take beta blockers but things are more settled now so I’m off them.As rily has mentioned it’s usual to have a second TURBT.I hope you find it helpful here, there is a lot of support and advice.Best wishes Jane
Thank you for your reply, I just can't help thinking if I had the spinal block option then, the biopsy that was cancelled back in October because I was at risk after recent heart attack, could have wet ahead and been diagnosed quicker.
It makes you realise it's all about asking the right questions. When we are in these situations we are all under stress. I've lost count of speaking to specialists and coming out with more questions than answers. It certainly pays to read people's experiences on here, I have found it so useful.
That's for sure I am normally on the ball with things like this, I am a cardiologist worst nightmare!! The look on their faces when I walk in to consultants room is priceless
If I had a pound for every consultant that has told me I have ‘an interesting medical history’ I’d be wealthy.
Good afternoon Theglobetrotter and welcome. I’ve had several TURBT under general anaesthetic and with a pre existing heart condition . The anaesthetist will make the decision on the procedure and will discuss any issues or alternatives prior to any treatment , best wishes .
Hi thanks for your reply, as I had said in my first post I had an appointment to have a biopsy carried out mid October under G/A, this was canceled at the last minute as the anaesthetist said he would prefer me to have been further into my heart attack recovery at that point.
So it was delayed right up until last week when I did go in for a Biopsy under G/A and tumor was discovered and TURBT was carried out. So really I was just trying to find out if any group members
Would know or suggest any reason why I wouldn't have been offered a spinal block away back in October when the first biopsy was cancelled due to my recent heart attack ??
