Hi, have been following the group for a while and only now plucked up the courage to join in. I was diagnosed with a 5cm T1 G3 bladder tumour at the beginning of Nov. 2023 I am due to have another Turbt this Thursday as there was no muscle tissue present from last opp.Can anyone tell me if this is the same procedure or is it classed as a biopsy. I had an overnight stay last time and left hospital with a catheter as I couldnt pass urine this was removed after to weeks of what I can only describe as awful, constant leaks and a feeling of sitting on a rod, really hope I don't need one this time.Sorry for the long post .

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the group. A follow up TURBT is usually a lot less severe as the first. it is mainly a mopping up operation to check they have not missed anything. They will take a few biopsy samples which helps to give a more accurate diagnosis. I hope all goes well. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi Granny M, as previous have said, welcome to this friendly, informative, helpful, non judgmental group…..I’m happy you plucked up the courage to add your thoughts…. Sometimes it takes a leap to do so, I’m no different.

i had my first TURBT July, 2nd was Sept (8 wks later), 1st one my catheter was in for 10 days after Op, and as hospital had not booked an appointment for me to have taken out so I had to plead with my GP surgery to remove it as it was so painful and causing me more problems than was helping.

my 2nd TURBT was so much easier, you  know what to expect, catheter was removed morning after the Op, I came home to rest….and drink plenty. This one should be just checking up on what or if anything has been left behind, with possibility of further treatment and what/ where it takes you. Just the next step in our journey, but a necessary one…. But a lot easier than the 1st.

sending you best wishes for Thursday, but try not to worry too much.

  • That second TURBT is quite normal with G3 diagnosis, just to help them be sure they have as accurate a picture as possible to determine what is the most appropriate treatment to recommend. I was overnight with my first one too, but because of severe cramping & nausea. Second one much easier & bladder felt more comfortable afterwards too, as they removed some necrotic tissue.  Hopefully yours will be smooth this time too. Best wishes for that & waiting for the next steps.

  • Good afternoon Granny M. I’m sure all will go well on Thursday. After 10 cystoscopy and 4 TURBT they’ve almost become part of life . Yes the catheter does feel like sitting on a rod but usually it’s only for a few days . My most recent TURBT was last Monday and the discomfort lasted only a couple of days. I’m told the results are in in 3 weeks, a bit longer than come dancing but more important , kind regards, John.

  • Granny M,

I too have G3. I had my 2nd TURBT today, to verify the evidence that the T1 cancer is non-invasive. And to remove any more bad stuff at the same time. It all went smoothly, and in my experience was much much easier than the 1st TURBT. I am now home the same day drinking a weak green tea and eating a satsuma. I have no catheter, and am pushing the fluids - mostly water - to get rid of blood and clots.

I am pretty confident that your 2nd TURBT will be much easier and that it will swiftly move things forward to an evidence based treatment plan.

    wishing you the very best,

    Leo
