Hi, Im new here. Had a flexible cytoscopy just over a week ago. After numerous urine tests coming back clear for uti and nothing being done I made appointment with doctor and finally got referred to uriology. Cytoscopy found several papillary lesions just on entrance to bladder. Now waiting for date for biopsy. Had pre assessment a week ago. Had ct scan on Friday (they had a cancellation). I asked nurse at pre assessment if I was having a turbt (found out about this on this site) and she said no, it was a biopsy. Do you think this means they won't get rid of the lesions there and then? Haven't come across anyone just having a biopsy on this site so I thought I would take the plunge and ask. Been looking at discussions for a month or two now. Sorry I have rambled on. Regards, Sue.
Hi SueB4 and welcome to the group. I am sure you will get lots of support and advice here as you go forward. I think it is unlikely they will go in just to take biopsies. The first step is usually a TURBT where they scrape away any offending cells and take biopsies at the same time. The biopsy samples are then sent for analysis and the results determine the next step. A TURBT procedure (trans urethral resection of bladder tumour) is a fairly straightforward op in the great scheme of things. Usually done in day surgery but prepare for an overnight. Your appointment letter should give you some information. Many of us have been through this so feel free to ask anything. I hope all goes well. Best wishes.
Thank you for your reply Rily. Reading other peoples experiences I thought it would be a TURBT I was having and that's why I asked my pre assessment nurse. She seemed very definite it was only a biopsy and I was a day case. I will prepare for an overnight stay and if it's not then it will be a bonus.
Hi Sue. It may take a few weeks to get an appointment. There may be a bit of a backlog owing to strikes and it depends on availability. In the meantime, keep drinking plenty of water to stop any clots forming. unusual for the pre op nurses to offer an opinion. In many cases they do not know what they are preparing you for. Best wishes.
Good evening SueB4. I have just returned today from a fourth TURBT and biopsy. I had understood that a biopsy was to be taken but in fact the surgeon explained that yes a biopsy was being taken but at the same time any material that caused concern would be removed. A bit sore at the moment but results will be discussed in three weeks time. Hoping this is helpful. Best wishes John. I should add that the procedure was done in a day, no overnight stay.
Thank you John for your reply. I have only spoken with the pre-assessment nurse (who told me it was a just a biopsy) and the lady who rang to tell me of the date of my biopsy. I know the surgeon will speak to me before the procedure so I’m hoping he will explain what that will involve. Thank you for telling me of your experience and I’m pleased you were treated as a day case. All the best, Sue.
