Just saw the doc

So I've got back from seeing the doc. He tells me I have a muscle invasive cancer and my bladder and prostate need removing.

Having a biopsy tomorrow to see if the lymph nodes have a problem.

So now I know. Sounds like things are gonna happen pretty quickly now.

And to think, if I didn't get that kidney stone none of this would have come to light. I guess that's what they call a silver lining huh.

Anyway I'm feeling pretty positive, thanks in part to reading peoples stories here which has given me the confidence that this is not the end of the world.

  • Hi MagicMirror,Sorry you need bladder removal. It’s good that you are feeling positive. It is a big op but once you have recovered you can lead a full life.I’m sure you will get plenty of support here moving forward.Best wishes Jane

  • Between you and me, given how often I'm peeing, this might be a good thing.

  • You're right, this is not the end of the world ! I suggest you writte all questions for the surgeon: neobladder or stoma (advantages and drawbacks of both)  possibility of nerve sparing prostatectomy, rehabilitation program (which can begin before the intervention). Before surgery my husband phoned to several patients as advised by the surgeon. It has been quite helpful.

    Best wishes

  • I felt like that as prior to removal I was going every few minutes or in retention. The surgery got rid of my very diseased bladder and the pain so removal has been good.

  • Hi MagicMirror, wishing you the very best, now you know what your up against, your focus can shift to getting through the op and a good recovery.

  • MM at least you have a clear direction - hopefully it will give the problem a total stuffing.

  • Hi

It’s good you are feeling positive about it, and it is a major surgery. My father in law had exactly the same operation at the start of September last year (he had MIBC and separate primary prostate cancer). He has a urostomy and at 78 has coped extremely well with it-no issues managing it at all.

I didn’t have bladder cancer myself, but my cancer had spread over my bladder and I’m coming up to 4 years since I had my bladder removed as part of a larger surgery. I also have a urostomy.

What I can say is there is definitely a good life possible after surgery and I’m glad I don’t have to get up in the night to go to the loo any more in this cold weather!

All the best with your operation and take it easy afterwards!

    Sarah xx

  • Hi  , I also have just found out that I have muscle invasive bladder cancer (I'm female though). They will remove my bladder and give me a hysterectomy as soon as CT scan confirms it is contained to my bladder. It's all a bit of a whirlwind eh!

Mine was picked up due to routine blood test showing reduced kidney function, then scan showing blocked kidney, which we now know was blocked by bladder cancer!

Currently trying to decide on Urostomy or Neo before I see the surgeon next week.

    Thinking of you
