My Dad was diagnose with Bladder Cancer May this year. Its muscle invasive, unfortunately he had formed colitis so we thought now looking back it appears to be from the Nurofen he was taking for the pain. They had to fix this before they did any treatment, so was a delay in the chemo. Then in August he had his first round of chemo he had a reaction to this and they had to put him on another form of chemo. He had about 4 cycles of chemo. He was then called in to chat about his blood results, his neophile levels were high and they would have to stop treatment until they could get the levels down and from this did another scan. Also just to point out he did have some of the tumor removed and that is when we found out it was 50% of his bladder.
Long story short they have since told us the tumor has grown in size and is not responding to chemo it has also gone into the ureter tubes, the one consultant told us he would need a stent to drain out the kidney, however this may not prolong his life we was told 3 months he would live then we was told 9-12. They told us they could try other forms of treatment but because they think he had colitis there could be risks however they do think it was from the Nurofen that caused it, as they unsure the decision would be with my Dad.
I am just so confused it feels like there really is nothing positive from this, if he has the stent, then that may not help and if he doesn't he could die from kidney failure not the actual bladder cancer. Has anyone been in this kind of position before and could give me tips on something I can ask or is there really nothing more they can do. In my head I am thinking can't they operate and give him a new bladder and remove the tumor from the tubes, however I know the consultant told us this is too risky to do now.
I feel so hopeless watching my dad in pain hope someone can help what our next steps could be there has to be something my dad is only 68.
Hello Prindos and welcome to this friendly and supportive group, although sorry to hear about Dad. Bladder removal would normally be offered but it sounds as if Dad may not be able to cope with the surgery. Has he been offered any alternative such as radiotherapy or immunotherapy? Best wishes.
Hi there, I am sorry to hear about your father. Mine also suffer from Cancer and has several complications - I wish you all the best and keep us posted.
Thank you for coming back to me. Yes he has been offered immunotherapy, the only issue is because he had Colitis they are worried this may cause constant back and fore to the toilet however they think it was caused from taking Nurofen, as they are not sure it would be up to Dad what he wants to do. He has his next appointment with the consultant on 9th Jan to discuss his options, it is so hard to think Dad may only have a few months, however I am still in hope there is something they can do.
Thank you same to you as well this is a great place so glad I have found it.
