Radiotherapy/chemotherapy

Hi hope someone can help.   My husband has bladder cancer he’s undergoing chemotherapy and is in his last cycle.    He has opted for radiotherapy/chemotherapy rather than bladder removal.   I’m wondering if anyone in here has been though that sort of treatment and what it entails?  The hospital are being quite vague at this point    He’s stage 3 bladder cancer.   Many thanks

  • Hi  and welcome to this friendly and supportive group. I opted for this treatment 10 years ago for T3/G3. 3 cycles of chemo (Gem/Cis) over 6 weeks . Then went on to 6 weeks of daily chemoradiation. I believe the latest protocol is now 4 weeks with a stronger dose. Treatment is painless but tiring. The chemo part is usually administered via a chemo pump on two of the weeks. This helps the radiation work better. Didn't really have a problem with the treatment but after treatment finished I had erratic bowels for several weeks and bouts of fatigue, but this faded and so far I have had nearly ten years with normal functioning bladder. Happy to answer any questions if I can. Best wishes.

    1. Hello Grub69. My son (45) has also opted to go down the same route. He's got one more round of chemo to have. Then I assume a ct scan to see if radiotherapy can still be done. I'm looking for the same as you on here, and will follow your post. Fond regards, Worried Mum. x
  • Thankyou for replying it’s all very confusing not really knowing so Thankyou for that it’s nice to talk to someone who knows first hand what it’s like.    Kind regards

    • Hi absolutely it’s all very worrying isn’t it    My husband point blank refuses surgery at this point so is going down the chemo/radiotherapy route   Wich I understand as he’s only 55’and feels a bag is something that he doesn’t want at this point.  If I find anything more out I will let you know.  Regards
  • Hi  . When the chemo is complete there will be several weeks wait as the chemo continues working after treatment finishes. Then some further scans to see how it has worked before moving on to the next step. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • That's exactly how my son feels and I can't blame them at such a young age. I've not found many posts so far from people who have gone the same route, apart from Rily who is very helpful. x

  • Hi  Don't mean to be doom and gloom but my husband went down the radiotherapy route and has suffered with Radiotherapy Proctitis ever since (radiotherapy ended in February 2023) he has constant pain and now wishes he had gone down the surgery route. I appreciate everyone is different but like you we found the hospital information was a bit vague.  Best of luck to you both.
