I had chemo followed by a cystectomy in November 2019, and they found no trace of spread in a whole bunch of lymph nodes they whipped out - all good. Everything has been fine since then, and have had annual scans of abdomen and chest - I have number 4 coming up in a couple of weeks.
Does anyone know how long this’ll go on for? I had a friend with bowel cancer and she had scans for 5 years after - is this what I should expect with mine? Everything I’ve seen online seems to suggest that they only scan for 2 years after bladder removal, and my consultant didn’t seem to know when I asked last year!
The problem with annual scans is that medical insurers treat them as an “intervention” so the clock doesn’t start ticking on your being “trouble free” (and therefore any future cancer being covered) til your last scan, even though the scans are purely precautionary and there’s been no sign of any recurrence.
So - is there anyone who’s had a cystectomy, then had follow up scans and can suggest when they go “on your way, son, all good”?
Thanks!
Hi
It's usually two scans a year for five years and then yearly check ups. I had my RC in 2017, but in my case they discovered incidental prostate cancer, so my six monthly checks have continued. I am back on three monthly as they discovered a lung nodule (quite comnon), which appears to be benign, so the likelihood is I'll be back on 6 monthly in the near future.
In short, every case is different and I would definitely ask next time around. If you have a Specialist Nurse you might want to ask them for advice. My Nurses are brilliant
Hi Bagman,I also had cystectomy in 2019.I’ve been having six monthly scans and then last year I was supposed to start annual scans. That didn’t happen because the scan showed a problem with my kidneys.I had a scan this May and will be having another in Nov.If the November scan is ok it will be annually from then on.I have a different urologist now and contact is just a few minutes by phone.I also have a lung nodule but they don’t seem bothered about it.He is not that interested in the kidney problem either.Best wishes Jane
