Hi I've had re occurring non invasive bladder cancer for several years. I finished a 6 week bcg course back in May and am now being booked in for an overnight stay and a GA cystcopy and biopsys.
My question is why the general anaesthetic when previously I've just had the flexi with local anaesthetic. to check for re occurrence.
Is this normal after bcg.
Regards Steve
Hi Steve-Tap,I would presume it’s because you are having biopsies. They don’t like to do biopsies using a local anaesthetic because they can’t go too deep into the muscle as it’s too painful.I’ve had several taken under local and it does hurt.If you have a general then they can inflate the bladder more and get much deeper biopsies. This is what one of my urologists told me.I don’t know whether this is normal after BCG but I’m sure someone will know.Best wishes for your cystoscopy.Jane
Hi Steve tap.
I've recently finished my first set of six BCGs and will have GA when they check again, so seems like this is normal. I should have asked, but I think it's because they take more scrappings from the bladder, rather than just checking by camera.
However I was told that I would not have to stay overnight.
Hope all goes well.
How many courses of BCG have you had Steve? How did you get on with them? Could you continue working during the courses.
Sorry you have to have anaesthetic again, but I am sure it will be better than being awake during a biopsy.
Here's wishing you all the best and please do let us know how you get on.
Hi I had a course of 6 installations on e week. I had no problems at all just a mild head ache for a few hours after and a little shivery but only after second one.
Yes I kept working as I'm better when I'm occupied and not dwelling on things.
All the best Steve
Steve
You are not wrong there. Always waiting for the next hospital appointment albeit they can be weeks or even months apart. Having said that I suppose it's better that they monitor you and if anything goes awry it can be spotted early. We are all in much the same boat. Take care.
