I started treatment for bladder cancer, stage T2 G3. On 12th April.
I decided to have chemoradiotherapy rather than RC.
The treatment will take place over 4 weeks. 20 days in total
First 5 days are chemo and radiotherapy.
Next 10 days just radiotherapy . Monday –Friday. Takes about 10minutes.
The last 5 days will be a combination of both chemo and radiotherapy.
I am 13 days in. Side effects so far are, diarrhoea, nausea, and mouth sores.
I’m glad to say the nausea & mouth sores cleared up after a few days.
The diarrhoea unfortunately is persistent, I do have medication to keep it under control. Otherwise I feel okay in myself, just off with friends for a walk in Cardinham woods. Have a good Bank holiday all.
Hi Helpet . I had this treatment. I was advised to use a good quality mouthwash regularly to help prevent mouth sores. Unfortunately we know pelvic radiation can cause bowel problems. I was ok during treatment but had some bowel issues after treatment finished, but it gradually got back to normal. It is important to keep drinking plenty of water to help with hydration. I hope it goes well for you. Best wishes.
I have just had my team meeting where it has been decided that I will have the chemoradiotherapy. My diagnosis is the same as yours. I hope you don't mind me asking but how long does each treatment take during the first week of combined therapies and do you need someone to drive you to and from treatments. Also when you are having just the radiotherapy do you need someone else to drive. My journey will be about 40 mins each way, mainly on motorways. Thank you. Sylvia.
1avender . Hi Sylvia and welcome to the group. Each session takes about 15 minutes and is painless, but usually a bit of waiting around. It can make you tired towards the end so not great for motorway driving. I was transported each day by the NHS volunteer ambulance service which is a free service in the NW. I had six weeks of chemo prior to starting radiotherapy. With radiotherapy I had a PICC line fitted and had a chemo pump on weeks 1 and 4. No real problems with the treatments. Some fatigue and a few bowel issues after treatment finished, but it settled. I hope all goes well. Feel free to ask anything. Best wishes.
Hi Sylvia. My first day of treatment was chemo , 2 drugs , one injected straight into PICC line, takes about 20miuntes.
The other drug comes in a pump and is connected to PICC line. This is administered over 5 days , then removed.I took it home with me , it's worn around the neck 24/7. I then went to radiotherapy for my first treatment which took about 15minutes.
All together first treatment took about 1 & half hours. Next 14 treatment's only take 15minutes.
Last 5 treatment's I had chemo via the pump again.
I travelled to hospital on the bus which takes an hour here in Cornwall. No problems. Good luck Sylvia
