Bladder cancer recurrence

I had a low grade non invasive bladder cancer removed 3 months ago and now a cystoscopy has found another tumour. Now awaiting for another TURBT to remove, grade and stage this tumour.
My questions are :
1. Is it normal for a recurrence as quickly as this.
2. Does this mean that I am more likely to get frequent recurrences.
3. How often does a recurring tumour return as high grade when previously it was low grade

  • Hi, must be very disappointing to have a recurrence so soon, but yes, that isn't uncommon. Unfortunately that is the nature of BC. Can't give any statistics about low grade turning to high grade, but it does happen. However, no statistics will tell you your particular path, just the level of risk. The gap between checks will increase if no recurrences, but otherwise will continue at the same interval.

If it's any consolation, I can tell you that my brother had multiple low/mid grade recurrences over a few years, but finally they stopped and he was eventually discharged. Best wishes.

  • Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to my questions.

  • My OH had high grade multiple [too many to count!] non invasive tumours removed. Then 6 BCG at weekly intervals. Then 6 weeks to let the bladder settle. At the cystoscopy they then found a single new papilloma so exactly 3 months like you. Handily the cystoscopy was under a general anaesthetic so they TURBT'd it away immediately and he didn't even know till he woke up.  And unlike you didn't have to put up with the wait for the next removal.

Then he had a course of Mitomycin and has been fine for 4/5 years since on regular checks.

    Hope that helps?

  • Hi that helps it seems the message is clear keep fighting and constantly check
