Finally it’s results day for my father in law and he’s headed off to hospital. He had bladder and prostate biopsies 4 weeks ago and has had to self catheterise ever since. He hasn’t been able to urinate once on his own. I’m not expecting good news as he’s already been told he needs a scan today-I’m presuming to measure against baseline scans he had last summer. He was supposed to have the scan last week but the hospital “forgot” to send out the appointment, and he didn’t ask what type of scan it would be today.
He kept cancelling the biopsy appointments for unnecessary reasons, so we are 6 months on from initial identification of a problem-not sure if he’s in denial or just doesn’t think it could be bad news today.
My partner is taking him and I’m hoping will be able to go into the appointment-another pair of ears is always useful as you can miss a lot of what is said. So, I may be back with questions for you all, or I may be checking out the prostate group!
Although I’ve had my bladder removed, I didn’t have bladder cancer-just cervical cancer spread across my bladder so I’m not so clued up about anything bladder related other than removal.

Just had a text. The consultant has called my partner in before seeing my father in law so it’s not going to be good. But it will be better to know. I’m cleaning here trying to distract myself! Thanks Jane.

Hi Rily -not so good. I’m afraid. Muscle invasive bladder cancer and prostate cancer. Plan is to treat the bladder cancer first as being most urgent. CT scan next week and bone scan, results to MDT to see how to proceed. If the scans are “ok” then looking at radical cystectomy and prostatectomy. Also looking at chemo and radiotherapy.

He was in pain coming home in the car but I suspect he must have been in pain before, but not said. I think he is a bit shell shocked today at how bad it is, though he did expect the news wouldn’t be good. However he has come home and is getting on with his day.
Logistics will be very difficult in terms of managing all the appointments as I’m back to hospital myself next week and the week after. I’m hoping my next procedure will be successful, as if it’s not I will need surgery which is potentially very difficult with a long recovery time. Guess we will just have to manage, although it’s really tough with no help.

Hello Sarah, talk about spinning a lot of plates all at once. I admire you're spirit and my heart goes out to you. Having to deal with someone close who is not well is one thing but when you have to go through treatment yourself is something else. I wish you well, my thoughts are with you all.
Take care Chris
Hi Jacaranda07
It’s huge amount of plate spinning, and added into the mix is my mother in law with two different types of dementia who needs looking after. She is not being told anything at the moment as she will not be able to understand, but that will have to be done after the MDT meets and the plan is firmed up.
I was very ill and rushed to hospital as an emergency last month due to a blocked bile duct which they failed to dislodge so will be back to try again that procedure again shortly. The solution would be gall bladder removal, but my total pelvic exenteration surgery makes that a more complex operation to even attempt.
Thank you for your kind wishes-I really appreciate that. It all seems a bit overwhelming today!

Hi Sarah,Do you think your father in law might be more amenable to having some help now ? It’s going to be far too hard for him to care for your mother in law if he is having treatment.I know how much I struggled looking after mum before the cystectomy and she didn’t fully understand due to dementia.I feel for you with all your own Ill health and no help.Love Jane xx
