Hi all
i had my first check up after TURBT on the 24th February 23.
when looking they found what looked to me like mountain peaks
I was then told by the person doing it that it could be scarring from op.
they took pictures and said they would have a chat with consultant and get in touch with me to let me know what the next step would be and they would see me in 3 months.
I would get a copy of report as soon as I was dressed.
well when it came to being given my report I was told consultant had seen picture etc and they would be booking me in for a biopsy and diathermy.
I read what it says on the report and it states
” shows early signs of recurrence “
I have my pre op tomorrow with my surgery booked in for the 28th.
also after my pre op I have an appointment to see urologist at 11.
Any ideas why I have to see urologist? I didn’t before on my last one.
also is it right that it may have come back after such a short space of time?
I really don’t know what to think and feel at the moment.
I am female.
Hi Ben1, from what I have read in several years on here getting a better idea around my husband's bc, it is usually left 6 weeks between TURBT and cystoscopy check up, precisely because it takes a while for the bladder to settle down and avoid confusion as to what is visible. That said, my husband had a new papilloma by the time he had 6 weeks of BCG and the 6-weeks-after-that check. In his case it was removed on the spot as he was under GA anyway. Then he was offered '3 equal choices, more BCG, bladder removal, or try Mitomycin.' He picked the Mitomycin and it has worked fine for him. I do tend to jump in and mention this, as some treatment centres seem not to mention Mitomycin [given into the bladder much like the BCG] if the patient does not ask.
I don't know for certain but the urologist appt may be to discuss such alternatives with you. Can you write down all your questions, take a sensible friend or relative in [armed with a copy of your questions] to ensure you get to ask and have all of them answered? So easy to forget something under pressure or even be hustled out.[ that was my rheumatologist, not anyone about bc tbf]
Thank You for replying.
I had my first TURBT on 24th October 22. So exactly 4 months to the day.
I was so surprised that there was something there because when I saw urologist a few weeks after TURBT they said op went well.
it’s the not knowing I don’t like. I also cope better when I am on my own for appointments.
I cope better when I know what I am dealing with.
Bladder cancer is a new one for my family as the cancers have been Lung, Bowel.
Hi Ben1. You are right: not knowing is the worse... reoccurrence with bladder cancer, I have been told, is frequent. For this reason once diagnosed it is kept under check. On this forum I read of people who had it come back many times. Try not to worry too much. What type of treatment did you have?
I had TURBT with one dose of Mitomycin afterwards that was it nothing else.
I will get my book out as it was put in there the grade and stage.
thing is I cannot go through it ever 3 months.
I know other people can but I can’t
To me I just can’t do it, I know I am being a wimp and other people cope doing it but it’s not me.
To be honest deep down I had a feeling something was up as I had some blood in my urine, but it never shows up on urine tests it’s always visible.
yes, I did mention this at my check up.
Maybe in time I will learn to accept the check ups regardless of time.
Maybe it’s because I feel low as on the 27th December 22 I ended up in A&E with pneumonia and was in intensive care.
I suppose tomorrow I will know for sure ( if it doesn’t get cancelled) what the urologist has to say.
Hello again.. nothing else?? Weird. It would be interesting to know stage and grade. If it was for example stage 1 grade 1, then I understand why they did not do any further treatment as it's usually necessary with grade 1, and even 2. I had grade 3 (stage1) so I am doing the "standard BCG treatment. And... we are all scared... believe me! You are not a wimp. I would be very surprised if you were not.. but you will feel better as soon as you know more about the future treatments and checks...
Hi Ben1 . NICE guidelines says this diagnosis should just be followed up with 3 monthly cystoscopies. We know this thing has a habit of returning. I don't feel the flexi checks are too bad. I've had more than 20 over the years and find it reassuring they keep an eye on me. I hope all goes well tomorrow. Best wishes.
Ah, that's why they have done no treatment. Ta is very early stage and grade 2 is low grade (not aggressive). They might tell you that given your stage and grade they were thinking of not doing any treatment but given the reoccurrence they think it's better to do a few cycles of bcg, or chemio. Don't worry too much: you just have had a minor setback... let us know what they tell you.
All the best!
Fairly standard pre op tests before a general anaesthetic. Although the frequent check ups are stressful, better that the cancer has been detected & addressed than not. Hopefully it will stay low grade & if all clear, checkups become less frequent. Best wishes.
