Hi, I am a UK citizen residing in France. I am currently being treated for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer in France. I am hoping that if everything goes well, my treatment will eventually consist of check-ups of decreasing frequency. I am wondering how disruptive it would be for my treatment if I relocated back to the UK. It would be nice to think I could just register with a local GP who could pencil me in for a check-up at the appropriate time with the nearest urology department but that could be a naive assumption. I’d appreciate any information or advice.
Hi trynab_stoical. Good to hear from you. Hope you are otherwise well. Going by posts we have had in the past, the first step as you say would be registering with a GP and then take it from there. You may like to post your question in the Ask an Expert section where you will get professional advice. You could also call the Mac support line and talk to someone in person. From outside the UK, the number is +44 207 091 2230, but this would incur phone costs from abroad. I hope your relocation goes well. Best wishes.
Hi trynab_stoical, I don’t think any GP surgeries could book you into hospital urology department, they would need to refer you and then urology would contact you. I think what I would do is register and make an appointment with your new GP when you move to the UK, but I would also contact the urology department at your relevant hospital and ask for their advice regarding your ongoing treatment. In an ideal world everything would fall into place but I’m afraid although our GP surgery were prompt with fast track referral for ?bladder cancer I was very disappointed in their patient care at the start of my husbands problems, so it’s not an ideal world, now he is under the hospital they have been brilliant. I would also make sure that I had all the details concerning the diagnosis and treatments etc, I’m not sure if there is any data sharing between France and UK hospitals, but any information you have would be invaluable in future treatment plans, perhaps your French hospital could print out information that would be helpful. Thank you. I posted my question in Ask an Expert
That seems like good advice - try and communicate with the hospital independently to help things along. Re data sharing between France and UK - I've been keeping scrupulous records of everything, the timeline and lab results etc. No doubt UK urologists will want to make their own assessment but I'd try to provide them with useful info, translated into english of course.
