I'm due for a turbt 3rd August quite nervous about it

  • Hi and welcome to the group. It is normal to feel nervous about any operation, and many of us know the feeling. A TURBT procedure is usually fairly straightforward. You will be asleep and know nothing about it until you wake up. You may feel a bit groggy for a few days, but should get back to normal quite soon. You then have a wait of a few weeks for biopsy results which will determine the next step. Please feel free to ask any questions . Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Thank you read alsorts about the catheter being very uncomfortable and  sore

  • Hi Lorraine, I had my first TURBT in October 2021, for the removal of 2 non-invasive tumours. I was uncomfortable following the op so having the catheter was a blessing in terms of visits to the toilet. I was in hospital for 2 nights and slept most of it, but I did make sure to get up and walk around and drink plenty of water, water is your friend. I only took the standard pain tablets because morphine does not agree with me, having had it before many years ago following another op and I knew it made me feel groggy for longer than if I had just taken the standard pain relief (this was my choice so please do whatever you feel to be comfortable)

Resting is the key following the op and I say it again WATER, WATER and Water to avoid any possibility of urinary tract infection. I also asked my local Doctor to provide me some antibiotics prior to my op just in case I developed an infection but lucky I did not. Avoid all carbonated drinks, caffeine and alcohol. It will depend on the size of the Tumour and how much they need to remove as to the sensitivity of the bladder and recovery following the op. it was not until around the 5th day that I started to feel normal and the discomfort eased.... I kept a positive mindset all the way through, and started some very gentle walking around about day 7 just to get out and about and fresh air.

I needed a second TRUBT in May 2022 which was to remove some non-invasive smaller tumours, this was day surgery with no catheter and I felt great after it. So, it does depend on the procedure and how much they need to remove as to the sensitivity and recovery. if you can, then take a family member or close friend with you for pick-up and drop-off as it was so nice to have someone familiar when I came out of hospital.

I avoided reading or listening to others because everyone has a tale to tell or someone they know who had terrible experience, your recovery will be unique to you.

Remaining positive was my saviour and of course WATER, there I've said it again! :-) :-)  I have been very honest in how it was for me, if you need any further information or just a chat then please just reach out.

I do hope the above offers you some comfort & wish you well for the future xx

  • Yes I can't have morphine either have a reaction to codeine based medicine thank you so much for your advice I will take note to drink plenty of water Droplet

  • You usually wake up with a catheter in place, but I didn't find it at all uncomfortable, just odd. Once it is removed, you have to do at least one wee before being allowed home - that is when you are likely to have stinging/pain/cramping - varies from person to person. Normally in & out in a day, but be prepared for an overnight stay. You will likely find you need to urinate more often for a while, but as B2B says, keep drinking water to ensure plenty of dilute urine.

Take things easy for a week or two as your body will be healing internally, although nothing to show on the outside. Hope all goes well.

  • Hi Lorraine w,I never found them that bad.The catheter was more uncomfy than painful but sometimes I could hardly feel it.At my hospital you had to pass urine 3 times before you were allowed to go home.Drinking plenty and taking regular painkillers will help with any pain.I used to find a hot water bottle was helpful too.Best wishes.I hope it goes smoothly.Jane

  • Hi, I've had 2 turbt and 15 courses of BCG and 3 cystoscopy's  .All good so far ,everyone feels nervous before the op its natural . So far I've not had any real side effects  that have been too bad ,slight discomfort  ,but manageable. Water is the key drink plenty I have 4 litres a day anymore and i'd have gills .Laughing KEEP POSITIVE .YOU WILL GET THROUGH IT .

  • Good luck Lorraine! I had my TURBT 9th July last year. It is really a minor procedure. Yes, uncomfortable, but that will pass in a few days, weeks max. As others have said, drink plenty of water, treat yourself (I have every day breakfast with 4 slices of bread butter, jam, and cappuccino) and as a very good friend of mine told me once, "trust your doctors and do as you are told!".

Let us know how it went!

    All the best

    Marco
