Just for information really. Had my TURPT on friday. Went in to hospital at 7.30. At around 9.00 the lady that that was doing my op came and spoke to me and explained what she was going to do.I went down for op at around 11.30. I was thrird on the list. One minute i was in a room with guy aneathatising me next minute i was in 'recovery' all done. It was actually 2 and 1/2 hours later.

Went back up the ward and had to stay the night. Became very uncomfortable as the anaesthetic wore off and about midnight i accepted some morphine juice that i'd been offered, and refused, earlier. Did the trick. It relaxed my whole midrift and i could drift off to sleep. Only slept for a few hours though as the noises in hospitals can tend to keep waking you (not a complaint just an observation).

While i was 'in' i got on famously with 4 other guys that were there for various ops on their postrates. We actually had quite a laugh considering the circumstances of our being thrown together.

The lady that did the op came around the next morning and i greeted her with 'here she is, my hero, my saviour' she smiled and went on to explain that she had removed the 4.2cm tumour i had in my bladder and also inserted a pipe from my right kidney to the bladder as the tumour was right on the outlet of my kidney tube and she was concerned it might not drain properly.

All the next day i gradually felt better and better. The, what i called, morphine juice was from a syringe that you squirt straight into your mouth. I had another two of those over the course of the morning and they helped fantastically. I recommend them now although at first i resisted taking any as morphiine sounded way too serious to me.

At around 11am they pulled out my catheter (Yowsa) and i had to wee three wees and they would check to see how much stayed in my bladder and what colour it was. After the third wee they were satisfied i could go home. Each wee i did hurt like i was weeing razor blades or something but already that is dying down a bit.

I was allowed home at about 4pm. I had a wonderful nights sleep last night. And feel ok this morning.

I'm sure the lady said she was going to put mitomycin into my bladder after op. And i think they do this as a matter of course. Someone will correct me if that's not so.

For a while after op i felt sick, would this have been the mitomycin ?

  • Hi Deloo,It’s good to hear you have had your op and are now back home. The nausea is most likely from the morphine as it’s a side effect as well as constipation. Some people tolerate it better than others. It can be helpful to take regular pain killers after the op and drink plenty to flush the bladder through.Take it easy and try not to move/lift anything heavy for the first few weeks.I overdid it once and had a haemorrhage exactly a month after surgery. If you feel unwell or are urinating too often get your urine tested for infection.Best wishes for a speedy recovery Jane

  • Thanks Jane. Appeciate the advice. I wasn't told all that much when i was checked out of hospital. I suppose it's all common sense really to take it easy and not pull or lift anything.

I have to wait now to see what sort of cancer they removed. It was very seaweedy i noticed at the cystocopy i had about a month ago. But i suppose they can only tell what it is for sure once they've lab tested it,

    Thanks for best wishes.....Del.

  • I forgot about anaesthesia causing nausea.Perhaps it was a combination of anaesthetic and morphine.Waiting for results is never easy, fingers crossed you don’t have to wait too long.Best wishes Jane

  • Hi Deloo. Good to know you got through the op ok . I was a bit sick after my first TURBT and as Jane says, it was a mixture of morphine and anaesthetic.. The razor pees usually last a few days, but should gradually ease off. I hope all goes well. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.
