Following my op, i am seeing significant weight loss. About 10% of body weight since op. Is this normal?
Hi,I was told that a stone to a stone and a half weight loss is usual with a cystectomy.I was extremely thin when I first came home as I had already lost weight before the op.I lost a stone in hospital and a bit more at home.I put all the weight back on and gained another 2 stone during lockdown.I ate little and often after the surgery. It might take time but you should start gaining weight again.Love Jane
I suppose it depends on weight beforehand as to 10% being normal or not, but some reduction & loss of muscle tone is to be expected. I don't recall quite how much I lost, but took me months to recoup. Keeping eating little & often (eg a biscuit or few spoonfuls of custard every couple of hours or so) in between small meals - concentrate on protein & carbs. Even when I was pretty much back to normal activities, I carried a snack box with me (mini shredded wheat, dried fruit & dark chocolate) or snack bars. Once I was back to a good weight, I then had to rein it in!
