So today the dreaded results were delivered from the badder cancer nurse. It was a grade 3, non invasive PTA staging. I understand the stage three, also the TA, anyone know what the P is for?.

treatment is as follows:

readmission into hospital for a second look inside the bladder, under general anaesthetic for a bioscope ( not heard that one before)  they have a slight concern about a simple renal cyst that will need close attention. Another CT scan

then start a BCP treatment once a week for six weeks, followed by anther every three months for up to three years.

So my question is, anyone know what the P stands for on PTA , why the concern over the cyst. What is a bioscope?

TIA

  • . Hi James. The P stands for Pathology. It just shows that the biopsies were analysed in a path lab, and doesn't really have any bearing on the diagnosis. Never come across the term bioscope in relation to the bladder, it is usually cystoscope. It's not unusual for them to have a second look. Ta is early stage which is good in the great scheme of things. Hope all goes well with the BCG. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about your news.

I logged in to post a new thread/update as I'n not really posted here for a few months.

Re the cyst, when I was diagnosed with bladder cancer G1 pta 4 years ago this month, I had MRI

and a cyst/s showed up in my liver and kidney - I was 58 at the time.  No further ollow ups. IMO, when an MRI/CT

scan etc is carried out they will often pick up other stuff but often no further action or resolved easily if picked up early when looking for something else.

FYI, I worry and I worry and this does not help and I hope it's all good for you soon when they tell you the cyst is nothing to worry about.

  • Hi rily

I have recently been diagnosed with grade 2 pTa and had no idea what the pTa stood for. Glad I read this thread and saw the Ta is early stages. Grinning

    Thanks for the info

    Sending love

  • Hi Jimmyma2, my grade and stage is the same as you, grade 3 pta, I had15 BCGs and been clear for over 8 years, I have a cystoscope ever 6 months, next one in a couple of weeks, (btw the pta is the stage not the grade) .I didn’t really have a problem with the BCG either but everyone is different. Good luck x

  • Second look is also gold standard for G3, to ensure not muscle invasive. You will be having many cystos to monitor, as BC is highly recurrent & prone to progress (may become muscle invasive).  The BCG treatment is to deter recurrence, but if it is not successful, you would need more aggressive treatment. Hope all goes well for you.

  • ...although bear in mind the more aggressive treatment could be Mitomycin delivered into bladder much like the BCG. This has worked really well for my OH after a post-BCG recurrence, he also was G3 Pta and had a lot of tumours/CIS but is now down to 6-monthly flexis.

    best to all, Denby

  • Good afternoon Jimmyma2  and thanks for your post. Riley has described one of your queries. My situation was similar to yours and I wonder if you had a biopsy with the rigid cystoscopy to be followed by BCG for 6 weeks.. I’ve just finished that procedure and I’m pleased to say it is effective. Best Wishes
