I’ve just recently been diagnosed with anal squamous cell carcinoma. I have a mass, apparently higher than normal, but it is blocking my my bowel movements. I’m on laxatives twice a day but find my stomach just rolling with gas and wondered if anyone had any suggestions for helping with that. I think it’s keeping me up at night and not allowing me rest.
I had my chemo/radiation  consult today and will begin treatment starting on the 28th of July. I believe once I start symptoms will improve with my bowels - only to get worse before it’s over.
I just need to sleep!!
thank you for having this group!

  • Hello Robin

A warm welcome to the forum although I am really sorry to hear of your diagnosis,  All the investigations seem to go on forever but you really don't have long to wait now.  Once treatment starts you really will start to feel more in control of what is happening and there is a light at the end of the tunnel.  Although it can be really quite tough towards the end the course of treatment is over a relatively short period with a very good success rate.  What really helps is having a calendar and marking off the days, it is so encouraging to see the end in sight!

My tumour, although it was anal cancer, was in the rectum and it caused skinny poos that led me to the doctor in the first place, I had no other symptoms.  You will find that the size of the tumour can be reduced quite dramatically quite quickly which should help with your bowel movements and gas.  It may be that your tumour is preventing you from passing wind, so in the meantime, avoiding foods that are known to cause gas might help, such as cabbage, corn, brussel sprouts, onions, beans and cauliflower.  Your local pharmacy may also help and be able to give you something over the counter.

You may well have read other posts with a shopping list, one of the things I could not have managed without is a Sitzbath, a portable bidet that sits on the loo and filled with lukewarm water is wonderful for soothing towards the end of treatment.  I also used mine for going to the loo, it was less painful under water and the Sitzbath is easily emptied and cleaned.  It is also important to keep your treating team in the picture when you are finding things tough.  They have a host of pills and potions at their disposal and will prescribe them the same day.

Anything at all that we can help with, please let us know.  We have all been there!

    Big hug

  • Hi Robin,

Sorry to hear you've had to join our club! Glad you have your treatment plan all set tho and yes, once treatment starts, you should see improvement fairly quickly... I certainly did. My tumour is/was quite low down and around 5cm. I also had trouble passing and the 'skinny poos', and had a lot of pain too. Within two weeks of starting radiotherapy, my pain and other symptoms improved greatly. I'm now two weeks post treatment and coming out the other side of the worst of side effects.

Not got much advice for the wind, but Irene made some good suggestions! Just wanted to welcome you here and wish you all the best.

  • Hi Rubin ,

Sorry about your diagnosis . I’m 6 months post treatment now and still get horrible wind and rolling tummy . I changed my diet to Lactose free and tried to eat some low Fodmap foods . I still get wind , as soon as I piut food in my mouth I can feel my tummy start . I think mine is from taking Laxido that I need about every 4 - 5 days .
Taking Buscopan helps me with wind pain as it relaxes my tummy . I checked with oncologist who was happy for me to take it and I buy it over the counter in a Chemist . I don’t take it regularly only when it’s very troublesome and painful . Just posting what has helped me .
if you did decide to try I’d check with your Doctor before .

    Kind  regards

  • Hi Robin

Welcome to the forum. I also developed bad gas from about the second week of treatment that also kept me awake at night, I was advised to cut out beans, pulses and green veg as Bungle1 has suggested and that really helped, I did eat a lot of carrots and was fine with those.

I’m now 3 weeks post treatment and have returned to my normal high fruit and fibre diet without any issues so far.

Hope all goes well with your treatment when it starts

  • Hello Robin,

l’m sorry about your diagnosis and for all the discomfort you’ve experiencing. If your bowel is partially blocked it must be very painful. Trapped gas can cause enormous pressure.

As some of the others have said it would probably be worth having a very low fibre diet. I was advised to do this when I started treatment and it did help a bit. I also resorted to using over the counter ‘wind’ relieving tablets as it was starting to interfere with the positioning at radiotherapy.

I hope you get some relief and good luck for 28th. X
