Hiya,
will be starting intense chemo radiation in the next few weeks. Just wondering if anyone knows any accommodation locally as I will be there 5 days a week and travel to and from my house/christies is over an hour.
thanks
Hi Newbie8824 welcome to the forum..Have the hospital any accommodation that they use if people travel distances for treatment? It may be worth asking them first. The other thing you may like to do is to give the Macmillan Line a call and have a chat with some of the lovely folks there who may have knowledge of facilities around the area of the hospital. 08088080000. Meanwhile I'm sending you very best wishes for the rest of your treatment and hope you manage to get something fixed up for you.
Hello Newbie8824
Welcome to the forum that I am sure you would rather not be a part of - but you have come to the right place for all sorts of tips and coping strategies whilst you go through treatment and beyond. If you have read previous posts there are quite a number of new members who are starting treatment around the same time as you so you won't be alone. Plus there are many people some years out of treatment who have stayed around to help newcomers and there is nothing related to your cancer that you can't discuss on here.
One of the essentials (for me and some others) was a Sitzbath, a portable bidet that sits on your loo. Filled with luke-warm water, it is invaluable for soothing the nether area once treatment is well under way and can even be used for bowel movements, it is easily emptied and disinfected. And you can start moisturising the whole area now, as long as you don't have cream on during the actual treatment which can act as a barrier.
It is always a good idea to have a supply of ready easy to prepare meals especially during the latter part of treatment. The side effects from treatment don't all come at once, it is a very gradual thing but most of us suffer from fatigue so not having anything too taxing to do is helpful. Also you will find that your treating team are very helpful so keep them informed of anything you are concerned about or if you need painkillers or creams.
Granny59 has given some good advice regarding accommodation, I hope you find something that suits. Failing that, sometimes the hospital offers transport.
Best of luck, please let us when you start, and we are always here to help support should you need it.
Irene xx
Hey Newbie8824
Wishing you all that is good for the treatment ahead. Stay strong
The hospital I was being treated at was over 2 hrs away from my home. They put me up in the hospital on the cancer ward as an elective in patient.
Speak to your team and hopefully something can be sorted out for you
Take care
PaddyBud
