Pip claim

  • Hi Viktor18 welcome to the forum. I  just saw your post and popped over from another thread to say yes that PIP is paid, if awarded, from the date that you applied which is recorded and is on the form and also include in the information that should have been sent out to you.

    Hope thats useful for you.

  • Unfortunately they are claiming I need to have had life changing things happen three months prior to claiming . They are saying that my condition started to effect My life on the day my chemo started although I’ve been suffering with this for over 13 months . I have all medical evidence from gp visits to hospital appointments sick notes etc is it with appealing the decisions ? Will this prolong my claim ?

  • Hi ,

The rules surrounding these claims change frequently. I know someone that claimed PIP a couple of years ago whilst going through a cancer diagnosis & subsequent treatments etc., they were awarded their  claim & that claim stood for 2 years regardless of their circumstances. Has your claim been accepted & it’s just the start date that you’re considering contesting?

  • Hi again

Previously I’m sure awards were paid from the date the claim was made i.e., the date the forms were submitted, I would possibly give the either Citizens Advice or the DWP a call & ask if appealing the start date of your claim would make a difference to the length of the claim as I’m sure after the term your claim has been awarded for, unless you suffer a permanent disability, you need to attend a physical assessment appointment the outcome of which decides if your claim will either cease or continue. I hope you get sorted soon.

  • Hello and thanks for replying it’s not the actually start date I’m appealing the start of the claim when I rang up and started the process was the 11th april. I’ve been awarded both elements living and mobility but it’s states they cannot pay me from the 11 April because my condition wasn’t effecting me . Although it was and had been since 2021 late November. They want to commence payment from the 30 th of may as this is when I started my chemo and it then started effecting my functional abilities. I’ve been suffering with this ordeal for a long time now I was misdiagnosed by my gp for three month as having suspected piles..this was December 2021! Doesn’t this prove it’s been ongoing a long time I have sick notes from jan to feb feb april , I have a lot of hospital correspondence etc .
Has any one Else been granted pip but been denied the waiting period ? Should I appeal?
    thanks

  • Hi   As I understand the process for claiming PIP, if you are unhappy with the decision, in the first place you need to apply for a reconsideration of the decision.  If  you are then unhappy with the outcome of the reconsideration decision, you would then need to  appeal the decision. To ask for a reconsideration, you can do this by calling the PIP helpline number on 0800 121 4433. It is free to call this number.  I would do this as soon as possible if you want to challenge the award.

As you are aware, PIP has two components, daily living and mobility.  I see that you have been awarded both elements. To quality for PIP, the effects upon your daily living or mobility, or both daily living and mobility, resulting from your medical condition need to have existed for a period of 3 months and be anticipated to  last for a further 9 months.

The issue seems to be that you disagree with the start date of the award.  From what you have said, you have been awarded PIP from 30th May 2022.  You say above that you made your claim on 11th April 2022. Therefore, I do not think you can be awarded money before the date of 11th April 2022, because a PIP award cannot start before  the date you apply.  However, the 3 month qualifying period can begin to run before you make you claim.

It seems that you want to ask PIP to re-consider the period between 11th April- 30th May 2022. You will need to tell PIP why you disagree with their decision.  A case manager will then look at your case again and decide whether to change the decision. They could possibly either telephone you for further information or request further medical evidence.  If you have any medical evidence, you can send this this PIP.

You can obtain further information on PIP from the government website by clicking the following link https://www.gov.uk/pip

You can also call the Macmillan helpline They offer advice on lots of things including entitlement to welfare benefits, financial advice and emotional and practical support. Most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week and it's free to call on 0808 808 00 00 have a look by Clicking here to see what is available and we also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

If you don't want to telephone them you can chat online or email them, if you click the following link this will take you to the links to email them or chat online -  https://www.macmillan.org.uk/cancer-information-and-support/get-help/emotional-help/macmillan-support-line#specialist_support

    Hope this helps,   Bev

  • Thank you I don’t want the award to be before the date I made the claim , I just want the award to be from when I made the claim and rang them up 11 April . If I was to ask for it to be from when I first had symptoms it would be last 2021 when all this started . The medical condition has effected me for many months now well before April 2022 . I mean it started in novermber 2021 .

  • Hi   the best thing to do is call the PIP helpline tomorrow and explain this to them. They'll then tell you how to apply for a re-consideration or the decision. Bev

  • That seems stupid as you filled the forms in from how it was effecting you from the 11th not for future issues.
