Burning of back passage 4 months after anal cancer radiotherapy. Is it possible that taking maximum dosage of paracetamol for prolapse disc and stenosis of spine pain can aggravate and affect the healing of my anus. The discomfort includes small stools and Bloody mucus.  I’ve not had this kind of discomfort prior to being told to take max dose of paracetamol.  I know I was told by the oncologist not to take Naproxen because of irritation of the site.  Could the same apply to paracetamol?  I’ve been taking paracetamol 2x4 tds for about three weeks.

  • Hi ,

I’m sorry you’re experiencing this discomfort right now. Personally I wouldn’t have thought that the dose of paracetamol that you’re taking should affect your healing process but I’m no Dr!.… Internal healing takes much longer than the external does following our kind of radiotherapy but if things have been ok & this has come on all of a sudden then I would give your treating team or GP a call just in case you have an infection. It may even be something as simple as a tear in the new skin that has formed & this could have caused some inflammation but to be on the safe side I would get your Dr’s opinion on this.

  • Thanks Nikki as always.

  • Hi Nana 42.I understand the pain,as I too am suffering pain and burning too.I am using Flamigel but it's not doing much for the pain.I told my Radiographer this morning but she just said to take my Paracetamol as usual.I was hoping she's change my cream but no such luck.Said it's caused by the treatment, and only stronger painkillers will help but I don't want to go o to Stronger ones yet, until I really need to.Hope you start to get some relief soon Nana,as its really painful isn't it.love Belzi.x

  • I’m sorry to hear you’re experiencing something similar.  My colorectal nurse sent me for a blood test and I’m awaiting an appointment for a look with a camera as she thinks I might have an infection.  If confirmed I’d be prescribed steroid suppositories.  Hope it helps.  You might ask some more questions of your support team.   Good luck, because if one hasn’t experienced it they won’t know how it effects our well being.

  • Hello Belzy, I just wanted to say that like you I held back with the pain killers as I thought if I did this and wait until I was to the point of crying out for the painkillers they would be more effective.  My oncologist said holding back pain relief isn’t going to improve the healing or even taking it. It controls the pain and never feel guilty if you succumb to taking sufficient to be much more comfortable. It makes such a difference to your journey to have less pain. I stopped the morphine as I felt guilty that I was being weak and was damaging my body but my specialist nurse convinced me as it is for such a short time and monitored I was not to worry. As time goes you naturally reduce doses with no I’ll effects. Hope this helps

  • Aw thanks Jaycee.I felt it was better to wait until I really needed something stronger as I still have another 3 weeks to go.lovely to hear from you again.please keep in touch.Belzi.xx

  • Hi , have you tried alternating paracetamol & ibuprofen? You can alternate them 2 hourly so you’ll have pain relief onboard every 2 hours. This was my pain relief regime throughout treatment as I couldn’t take any of the opiate based painkillers such as morphine or codeine as they caused me awful constipation!
