PLATO TRIAL

Hi

Am in the early stages and just had my post MDT meeting with the Consultant.  She threw me a bit of a curve ball (having just got my head around the 6 week standard treatment) by suggesting taking part in the PLATO Trial.  The paperwork she gave me to read is just factual/procedural and that's about it.  I just wondered whether anybody else has accepted a place on the trial and what their experiences were.

Thanks

    Hi Linda,
I made sure the moisturiser was non perfumed like E 45 or Aveeno. But when i started my treatment they gave me a lot of meds and moisturisers so i used what they gave me
The underwear I found in Debenhams , i looked for a high cotton content and i chose shorts because they weren't tight in the groin area which can be sore as the skin burns with the radiotherapy and it can peel off...I also bought some mens boxer shorts as they were loose fitting make sure its high cotton content.. but sometimes it was more comfortable to go without..no one knows when you wear a long skirt !! LOL
    Good luck with the treatment

    Hi Sue,

Thank you for your quick response.

I’ve read that’s its better to start moisturising before treatment starts, I’ll get some E45 lotion and apply liberally front and back !

I’ll have a look at Debenhams, see what they have in stock.......otherwise I’ll be going commando!  LOL

    Thank you Sue,

    Linda

Hi, DEb1E Did you do the trial, how did it go?

    Splinters

  • Hi Splinters

I did take part in the trial and was randomised to have the 23 days treatment rather than the 28 which I completed last week.  I had got into a routine so was lost the first couple of days.

Aside from getting the bladder balance right the treatment was fine, it is quite odd having radiotherapy because you can't feel or see anything my only job was to lay still which is easier said than done when you are thinking about it!  I was fortunate in that I didn't have problems w sickness but was v tired even though I was only really going to and from the hospital.

Also had a metallic taste and fuzzy feeling in my mouth the first week after taking the chemo tablets but my father suggested I take a sip of water before putting the tablet in so it didn't touch the sides as it were and that worked and I haven't had any problems w mouth ulcers or anything so would recommend doing that.  Other than that I cribbed all the advise, suggestions etc from this forum which helped.  The last few days of treatment I started to have problems (and pain) w going to the loo and my skin in the nether regions was v sore which has continued but they did tell me it would get worse over the 10-14 days after treatment ended and should then start to get better so counting the days, having lots of salt baths and taking paracetamol and ibuprofen but it is reassuring to know that I can call the hospital if I need anything stronger or more help.

I have a check up in November and a scan in December/January so won't know how it all went until the scan so a way to go but feeling more positive having got through the treatment which in reality wasn't as bad as my imagination before it started.

    Hi Deb1E,

So glad you have come through the treatment well and still feeling positive.
You will start to improve quickly and feel so much better.
Myself i have my results of the 2 year CT tomorrow, so fingers crossed that all is still good.
