My husband was diagnosed with rectal cancer and also had a number of polyps in his colon. The cancer had spread so he was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer. This unfortunately is not the first time. He had testicular cancer when he was 23. He had surgery 7 weeks ago and physically is doing really well but mentally l am really worried. Just recently he seems to be depressed and feels very lethargic and just wants to sleep. I just wanted to ask if anyone else has gone through this and has any advice on how to help.

    Hi

I’m so sorry to hear of your husbands recent diagnosis and how his situation is affecting him. It’s an emotional roller coaster for us cancer patients and the ripple effect is wide.

You can call the Macmillan helpline and speak to someone for advise or is there a Macmillan nurse at your husbands hospital you can talk to?

You’ve joined the anal cancer group however, I’d advise you join the rectum cancer group where you can connect with other RC patients who will understand better what your husband is experiencing.

When I was going through treatment I wanted to retreat, rest and sleep a lot. My husband was worried about me as I wasn’t very communicative but this is what I had to do to get through it. Being outdoors definitely helped my mood although admittedly it was sometimes hard to encourage me out of the house!

How he’s feeling will be temporary but you’re doing the right thing by connecting with others who understand.

Sending you strength and wishing you both all the best.
